With the rise of Nicki Minaj, it seems as though female emcees are making a resurgence; with female rap legends even coming back to partake in the renaissance. Former rivals Foxy Brown and Lil' Kim have both leaked some freestyles/tracks, and more photos and live footage are circulating of Hip-Hop queen Lauryn Hill flirting with the idea of a comeback. However, these past few days placed a few rumors on the mill that have proven to be nothing more than that.
We first reported that Foxy Brown was rumored to be starting a formal beef with Nicki Minaj. As of yet that is complete hearsay, which may or may not be good for Foxy Brown, who has dropped off the radar for a while now. That rumor was only the tip of the iceberg. The next came from various rap outlets reporting that Lil' Kim has signed to Roc Nation and Jay-Z will be the Executive Producer of Kim's next project. This news was prematurely reported, as now there is no other information available. Some news sources are backpedaling on the story since the follow-up is slim. There was also no confirmation as to whether or not Kim would also be represented by Roc's management side. No information is available about any of it. Talk about a confusing buzzkill.
Finally, and perhaps the most nerve-wracking rumor is that Lauryn Hill would be headlining this year's Rock the Bells. First it was reported that Lauryn would be performing ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' in its entirety at each Rock the Bells date. Then it was suggested that it was a rumor. Next, MTV reported that it was factual, and finally the Rock the Bells 2010 Tour was announced with no Lauryn Hill in sight. Rock the Bells founder Chang Weisberg said the following, alluding to the fact that he probably reached out to Lauryn and isn't quite sure of the answer:
"Personally, I would love to have Lauryn Hill on this bill. We would love to have a lot of acts on the bill and not to single out Lauryn or Run DMC but know that the energy surrounding Rock The Bells creates that kind of excitement and anticipation for people. It's almost like a massive ball of positive energy that attracts a lot of attention and hopes. One day maybe it'll happen, it might not."
We're still keeping hope alive.
