Pop Shots Just A Little Crush By: Adam Bernard Last updated November 25th , 2009
Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from New Moon and Susan Boyle crushing records, to Justin Bieber's fans crushing each other, to Lady Gaga crushing the idea to that all pop stars need computerized vocal assistance, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.
* New Moon owns the universe. Everyone knew the film would do well, but I don't think anyone could have predicted its $72.7 million dollar opening day. $72.7 million is a nice chunk of change for an opening day. Actually, it's the nicest chunk of change ever for an opening day. I don't know where Harry Potter is right now, but someone needs to let him know that his time is up. The vamps from Twilight have a stranglehold on pop culture until further notice... or until someone gives Buffy Summers a call. That's one girl Edward Cullen does not want to see!
* Justin Bieber is the 15 year old singer that has all the tween girls going crazy. Unfortunately, this past weekend at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, NY, he had them going a little too crazy. To be fair, he wasn't actually there for the insanity, he was on his way to a scheduled signing there, but the mere thought of his presence sent the girls who were waiting there hours in advance into a frenzy. 3,000 screaming fans proved to be too much for mall security to control as the tweens turned into a mob of high pitched lunacy. Five people were taken to the hospital with injuries and Bieber ended up not even being allowed to go into the mall. Not exactly the kind of Girls Gone Wild scene most pop stars hope for. Where's Paul Blart when you need him?
* In more teen-pop disaster news, last week Miley Cyrus' tour bus driver was killed when the bus he was in overturned in Virginia. Cyrus was on a different bus at the time, which means her singing has already been ruled out as a possible cause for the crash. Disney has not commissioned a film about the tragedy... yet. If they end up doing it, though, I think it would be funny if they used Selena Gomez as the lead instead of Cyrus.
* It looks like I'm not the only person who loves Lily Allen; Karl Lagerfeld has tapped the "Smile" singer to be the face of his Coco Cocoon collection. Would I prefer to hear her songwriting skills than observe her modeling skills? Of course, but at least this keeps her in the public eye, which will give her more opportunities to release albums. I'm not buying the idea that she's quitting music. Perhaps we'll see an EP in conjunction with the Coco Cocoon collection. It seems like a great opportunity for everyone involved. Whatever happens, though, anything that gives us more Lily Allen is cool with me.
* Late last week Tila Tequila stripped down to her birthday suit on ustream and ranted like a crazy woman. In all honesty, it didn't seem like that much of a straying from Shot At Love, but her lawyer claims there's something seriously wrong with Tila and that he's trying to get her help. My favorite line from Ms. Tequila's nude ramblings - "I think a woman's body is a beautiful thing... that's why I'm a lesbian… I was born naked... anybody who is against that is gay and in denial." So, anybody who is against her lesbianism is gay? Forget #tilasarmy, I'm much more interested in hearing more of #tilaslogic.
* Shattering an Amazon.com record with over 100,000 pre-sales of her album, I Dreamed a Dream, singer Susan Boyle is making the move from reality show sensation to actual star. Her clips from Britain's Got Talent created a huge buzz on YouTube, but as Tay Zonday and the Dramatic Chipmunk can tell you, buzz on YouTube doesn't necessarily net you anything more than buzz on YouTube. Major labels should take note - giving Boyle some time to actually record an album, rather than push out something half-assed, hasn't lessened her popularity at all.
* The Pop Shots video pick of the week is an amazing clip of Lady Gaga from around half a decade ago (back when she was still going by her real name) performing at an NYU talent show. At a time when far too many singers use various computer programs to make themselves sound better, this clip proves Gaga is a true talent who has the chops to stick around for a very long time.
And with that, my time is up for the week, but I'll be back next week with more shots on all things pop.

There are times as a so-called critic that I hear from people around me that I am 'too nice' or 'you could stand to be a little meaner.' So while I agree with these people that I could be a little more 'crusty' in my views on songs, I generally actually LIKE what I hear and if I like something, I am going to 'praise' it.
It's that simple.
I can like the latest "I'm from the country song," even if I am tired of Read More ...

Right now I'm reading a lot about music. It almost sounds oxymoronic. To read about music, when music is what you listen to. But music, like many of the arts, is something that touches Read More ...
