Pop Shots Kiss And Sell By: Adam Bernard Last updated December 2nd , 2009
Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from Adam Lambert's genius gay kiss, to Toni Braxton's moronic heterosexual kiss, to the kiss Jason Segal was looking to plant on quite a few Swell Season fans, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.
* Adam Lambert, and the person who booked him for the American Music Awards, are geniuses. The AMA people had to have known Lambert was going to do something shocking, which would make the AMAs a talking point for days after it aired, and at the same time, Lambert had to know the AMAs would be the perfect venue to officially shed his "American Idol contestant" tag and become a star on his own. Why mention Idol when you can now mention Lambert's gay kiss and fully-clothed simulated oral sex? Some foolish commentators are calling the decrying of Lambert's gay kiss a double standard as there was little offense taken when Madonna, Britney and Christina locked lips on TV a handful of years ago. Those critics are omitting a major fact regarding those kisses, though - one was done on ABC, the other was done on MTV. People expect something shocking from the latter. The former, however, is a Disney owned network people expect more family fare from. This is why Lambert was a genius for doing what he did at the AMAs and not the VMAs. He picked his venue, he made it happen, and now he's a star.
* Mary Weiland, soon to be ex-wife of Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland has written a book about her tumultuous life and times with the rocker. From excessive drug use, to more excessive drug use, to even more excessive drug use (and a trashed hotel room, or two), the book, "Fall To Pieces," which is named after a song by her husband's former band, Velvet Revolver, surprisingly has Scott's blessing, even with him currently working on his own autobiography. These kinds of books are usually pretty dang interesting, and being that I'm a fan of STP I may have to pick this one up.
* Toni Braxton had one of the more successful marriages in the music industry. That is, until she performed at the Soul Train Awards and very publicly made out with Trey Songz, who is nearly 20 years her junior, on stage after their performance. Braxton's husband, former Mint Condition keyboardist Keri Lewis, was in the audience while it all went down and a couple of days later their marriage was over. I wonder if whenever "Successful" comes on the radio Braxton's two sons think, "that guy's the reason mommy and daddy aren't together anymore." Congrats to Toni and Trey, you were "Successful" in breaking up a marriage.
* Omarion is looking a little bit different these days. Not Sammy Sosa's face different, but the 25 year old singer has cut off his trademark braids in an effort to show a new, more grown up, image in conjunction with his next project, Ollusion. The haircut is already having a nice reverse Samson effect for Ollusion, an album that's seen it's share of setbacks. From a failed partnering with Timbaland's Mosley Music Group, to an only-lasted-two-weeks deal with Lil' Wayne's Young Money, there have been quite a few bumps in the road, but Omarion, new haircut and all, now has a deal with EMI and the album is slated to hit stores in mid-January.
* Warner Music Group, which has such acts as Jay-Z and Madonna, posted a net loss of $18 million dollars for the fiscal fourth quarter that ended on September 30th. Losing $18 million is the equivalent of the Yankees misplacing Derek Jeter. That's Dr. Evil money. At that level of loss, record sales aren't solely to blame. There's also some crazy mismanagement going on if a label is losing THAT much money while having two of the biggest acts in the world today.
* The Pop Shots video pick of the week is something hilarious from How I Met Your Mother's Jason Segel. Segel took the stage at a Swell Season concert and played a very personal song for the ladies. How personal? Well, let's just say you'll learn some things about Segal that you probably never imagined you'd ever know.
And with that, my time is up for the week, but I'll be back next week with more shots on all things pop.

Being a huge fan of music, I learned of American Idol and watched it from the first season. The success of Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtry, Clay Aiken and Carrie Underwood may have made Idol a viable television property and given the music industry one more outlet to find talent. But rarely has it offered up an interesting topic for debate such as the presence of teen country singer Haeley Vaughn on Season 9's ros Read More ...
