Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from Beyonce fighting with common sense, to record labels fighting with reason, to Jimmy Kimmel jumping into the fight between Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

Beyonce%20Knowles* Wonder where Beyonce was on New Year's Eve? Singing and dancing for the son of a mass murdering dictator, of course! Yes, that's right, while the rest of us were ringing in 2010 with some lighthearted revelry, Jay-Z's wifey was taking home a cool two mil for a performance for Muatsim Gaddafi, who is the third son of the Libyan leader Muammar-al Gaddafi. For those who need a primer, the elder Gaddafi is the dictator is Libya who has financed and run terrorist attacks that have killed thousands over the years. Hearing the news of Beyonce performing for the son of such a tyrant has prompted numerous old high school classmates of hers to say "man, had I known back then she'd say yes to anyone, and if she's performing for a Gaddafi she'll say yes to ANYONE, I totally would have asked her to prom."

* In news of record labels trying far too hard to fight the internet and far too little to actually find some good artists, EMI is currently beefing with Vimeo.com over videos that feature regular folks lip synching over copywritten materials. Claiming potential copyright infringement, apparently EMI has forgotten that even their own artists lip synch in their videos. Heck, if lip synching copywritten material was a crime Britney Spears would never be able to go on tour.

general%20larry%20platt* "General" Larry Platt may forever be known by the masses as the "Pants on the Ground" guy from American Idol, but his life story is actually really incredible. A civil rights activist from the time of Martin Luther King Jr., Platt worked alongside Dr. King and continues to fight for civil rights in his current hometown of Atlanta. According to an article by the Associated Press, the inspiration for his Idol song came, "after he spotted a young man holding a child, his pants hanging below his waist." Platt was quoted as saying "after all this work I did with Dr. King... walking around with your pants on the ground? They're going to have to get them up. I'm sorry." Suddenly I feel like not just dancing to his song, but shaking Platt's hand.

* The Jay Leno - Conan O'Brien late night war was ugly enough with everything that was being said about Leno taking his Tonight Show time slot back, but Jimmy Kimmel managed to throw even more gas on the fire when he appeared on Leno last week. During a Q&A segment the late(r) night funnyman skewered the former, and apparently future, Tonight Show host, saying the following:

Leno: What's the best prank you've ever pulled?
Kimmel: I think the best prank I ever pulled was, I told a guy, five years from now, I'm gonna give you my show, and then when the five years came I gave it to him and then I took it back almost instantly. It was hilarious. I think he works at Fox or something now.

Leno: Have you ever ordered anything off the TV?
Kimmel: You mean like NBC ordered your show off the TV?

Yikes! I bet someone's been removed from Leno's Christmas card list. As an aside, this CraigsList posting regarding The Tonight Show is priceless. And for the record, even though Leno seems like a genuinely nice guy, Pop Shots is Team Conan all the way. Sadly, he has to leave The Masturbating Bear at NBC.

* Finally, as each episode of Jersey Shore passes and I fall more and more in love with JWOWW (how you can NOT love a girl who says she's gonna punch a guy in the face and within five minutes does just that?), the parodies keep rolling in. My favorite is this one made by Babelgum which features some infamous scenes reenacted by little kids. "HAM!"

And with that, my time is up for the week, but I'll be back next week with more shots on all things pop.

Being a huge fan of music, I learned of American Idol and watched it from the first season. The success of Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtry, Clay Aiken and Carrie Underwood may have made Idol a viable television property and given the music industry one more outlet to find talent. But rarely has it offered up an interesting topic for debate such as the presence of teen country singer Haeley Vaughn on Season 9's ros Read More ...
