Drugs Are Bad, Mkay

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from a pop starlet getting caught with a purse full of cocaine, to DMX's continued drug issues, to a humorous comedy clip that features Justin Bieber smoking a joint and shooting a guy in the leg, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

natalie%20mejia* Natalie Mejia, who is a member of the pop group Girlicious, was charged with possession with intent to sell after cops found a dozen plastic bags of cocaine in her purse. Girlicious, for those who don't remember, which I'm sure is all of you, is the Pussycat Dolls' reality show spinoff group that had done nothing even remotely noteworthy until this. The best part of the entire story is that according to the AP, "Mejia said the drugs were not hers and claimed she didn't know how they got into her purse." The coke fairy strikes again! Feel free to use that defense in court Natalie, I'm sure it will work just as well as "I don't know how they got there."

* In other news involving artists and illegal narcotics, DMX is in trouble ... again. Yes, everyone's favorite barking rapper was arrested for violating his probation and it was drug related. The issue this time around was that he was "regularly using illegal drugs during the last nine months." DMX's current defenses that people made him "lose my mind up in here, up in here," and proposed free distribution of the drugs, "X gon give it to ya, gon give it to ya," seem to have fallen on deaf ears, or simply uninterested ones. He should be used to people not being interested in his words by now, though, it's how the hip-hop community has reacted to most of his work over the past five to ten years. Speaking of five to ten years, I wonder if that's how many he'll get for this?

* If there's one thing that's always been true, it's that kids love Gene Simmons. OK, so maybe Simmons isn't exactly kiddie fare, but he's hoping they'll learn to love him as Kiss has teamed up E1 Entertainment to produce a kids TV series that will also, of course, have a merchandising tie in. Currently, the youth of America refer to Simmons as "you mean that guy from the Dr. Pepper commercials?" and who couldn't build on that kind of notoriety?

Black%20Eyed%20Peas* Two major groups are planning on coming to movie theaters near you, although one will be there much sooner than the other. First, on March 30th, The Black Eyed Peas' "E.N.D. World Tour" will be shown live in 500 movie theaters nationwide. In addition to the concert, there will also be a 30 minute featurette that will have interviews with the group and behind the scenes footage. Meanwhile, Flaming Lips' frontman Wayne Coyne has announced he's about to get to work on another film. Much like the Peas', it will involve his band, but in for this particular project they'll be used as actors rather than artists. Coyne's last movie, Christmas on Mars, took seven years to make, and the band has no plans to stop touring while all this is going on, so you probably don't need to start getting in line for tickets just yet.

* Perhaps the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should start considering only working with bands that will actually show up for their induction ceremonies. Peter Gabriel was already going to be a no-show despite Genesis being inducted, and last week came the news that ABBA had no plans to reunite for the event. I understand one of them refuses to fly, but still, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is pretty cool, bands should want to be there for their inductions. If they don't care enough to show up doesn't that relegate the place to just being a spacious, and showy, storage house for artists' old stuff? Legendary acts, give the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame some life!

* Finally, we're very sorry to report the ugly truth about Justin Bieber. Apparently he's just another thug artist. Look at the evidence below (and enjoy the dude in the background mean muggin the entire time).

And with that, my time is up for the week, but I'll be back next week with more shots on all things pop.

With Memorial Day this coming Monday (May 31, 2010) it's the official kick-off to the summer season and as always it seems that country radio has stuck to their formula for how songs should be played seasonally.  In the fall/winter months we are given more ballads about love and loss and everything in between, in the spring and summer we're given fun little 'ditties' that are designed to be nothing more than enjoyab Read More ...
