What Are You Doing There?

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from why Miley Cyrus shouldn't be anywhere near your mouth, to why Justin Bieber might be at the BET awards, to why two 80's icons have been spending a lot of time in hospital beds, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

miley%20cyrus* This just in - you don't want to put Miley in your mouth! Yes, Britney Spears needs to move aside because Miley Cyrus has a whole new kind of "Toxic" for the kids as last week Wal-Mart had to pull an entire line of Miley Cyrus-brand necklaces and bracelets from its shelves after tests performed for The Associated Press found the jewelry contained high levels of the toxic metal cadmium. According to the AP, cadmium in jewelry is not known to be dangerous if the items are simply worn, but concerns come when a person bites or sucks on the jewelry. So no more biting or sucking on Miley until further notice!

* Justin Bieber has inexplicably been nominated for a BET Award in the Best New Artist category. According to BET's President of Music Programming and Specials, the reasoning was as follows, "Bieber has crossed the color boundaries the same way that hip-hop has crossed the boundaries the other way for a number of years." Personally, I think there are two much more real reasons Bieber was given the nomination, the first being the overly obvious reason of ratings. BET has finally figured out where the money's at and it's with the tween girl community. I wonder how all those tween girls will react the first time they see Rick Ross? The second reason I think they nominated Bieber for an award is that they're wondering which wack rapper will try to rob him first if he shows up. I wonder how Bieber will react the first time he sees Rick Ross?

* It was a week of emergency room visits for two 80's icons as both Bono and Bret Michaels found themselves in the hospital. The latter might want to consider having his mail forwarded there. Bono had to have emergency back surgery, which may effect U2's upcoming tour, while Bret Michaels, who will have a hospital wing named after him at the rate he's going, had a "warning stroke" and has been diagnosed with a hole in his heart. I wonder if Bret's gig as Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice (congrats Bret!!!) provides good health insurance?

carrie%20underwood* Carrie Underwood is doing something to help Tennessee flood victims who are currently under water with her newly created flood relief fund for displaced Tennessee residents called Temporary Home. In addition to her own donations, Lifting Lives donated money from the taping of ACM Presents: Brooks & Dunn - The Last Rodeo tribute special that aired Sunday on CBS. All future Idol contestants should take note, Underwood is raising the bar for what it means to be an American Idol.

* Music fans who've been missing Panic! At The Disco, which should be everyone, because they were awesome, will be pleased to hear singer Ryan Ross and guitarist Jon Walker are back in action with a new group, The Young Veins. The Young Veins are set to perform at Bonnaroo and then hit the road alongside Rooney for a summer U.S. tour in support of their upcoming album, Take A Vacation!, which is due out June 8th on One Haven Music. I have my fingers crossed that this ends up as great as I think it can be.

* My favorite a-dork-able synth pop beauty released her latest video last week and it seems as though she's taken up interior decorating. After checking out Lights' highly creative clip for "Second Go" I'm not sure everyone will want to hire her to paint their living room, but she sure is fun to watch work! How can you not love this woman!?!?

And with that, my time is up for the week, but I'll be back next week with more shots on all things pop.
