I will take an educated guess that the revolution will not be televised. Why televise it when in 140 characters or less, you can tweet away? Well, more rappers are tweeting away; "leaking" their music and pleading for Retweets. Some of them have gotten rid of their career long publicists and dignity along with it.
When has cutting corners ever paid off? I ask this question just to bring up the fact that they're cutting corners. This is social media that you're playing with ... this is big business here. And if you believe you have the time to build up your following on your own, there's some ocean side property I could sell you in Iowa.
First off, if you are tweeting all times of the day, you are showing your lack of focus to your fans. They'll love the interaction in the beginning. But after a few days, people will begin to pick you apart. Revisiting my column from last week, the man that brought you three installements of The Blueprint, doesn't have a Twitter account.
Secondly, nothing makes me want to purchase your product more than reading your tweeting errors. This is a business, people! If you picked up a Snickers Candy Bar spelled "Stickers," would you buy it? Of course you wouldn't. So why should I buy your album after reading, "God Mernting my neg!" Lastly, the same publicist you fired because you wanted to save a buck may be the person you come across when Social Media passes you by.
Look, don't listen to me. It's your choice. Just keep on tweeting. Be the almost celebrity that actually runs your account, like that's cool. If you had the money, your inflated ego wouldn't allow you to tweet for yourself. You already don't hold the umbrella you stand under. I'm just saying, if Christina Hendricks can say that it's not becoming for men to have Facebook pages, I can say that rappers shouldn't be tweeting. And if a rapper has a Twitter page, that rapper better not have a thing to do with answering the question: What Are You Doing?
