With the new year looming, music critics have been scrambling to comprise various top ten lists to commemorate the decade. But your BFF, however, has one-upped my fellow literary snobs by creating a top twenty albums of the decade list that will be unparallel and drastically different than anyone else could dream up. Touching on all the musical spectrums, whether it be hip-hop, rock or pop, we got it all. So kick back with your Starbucks frappuccino and enjoy an overdose of rhetoric as I count down my top twenty albums of the decade!

They might have been around a few years earlier, but in 2008, Blessed By A Broken Heart unearthed a gem - that being their self-titled album. It's a metalcore circus, but not constructed in the manner of Avenged Sevenfold or The Devil Wears Prada. Instead, the crew laced their music with a hint of glam, 80's rock and enough melody to keep Obama two-steppin' all the way to Hawaii for the holidays (or at least the airport). It's Read More ...

Suicide Silence has been around for the past seven years, but they were quite arguably the biggest metal band of 2009. It all started this past June when the Riverside, Cali-based deathcore quintet (comprised of vocalist Mitch Lucker, bassist Dan Kenny, drummer Alex Lopez and guitarists Christopher Garza and Mark Helmun) dropped their sophomore set No Time To Bleed, a heavy fast-paced collection that had metal heads and critics alike making a ton of noise. The crew would go on to win a Golden God award for "Best New Talent," place a song on the SAW VI soundtrack and tour with the likes of Mudvayne, Megadeth, Machinehead and the Black Label Society. It was a banner year, to say the least.

In this 101D.com exclusive, Dan Kenny reflects upon 2009 and talks about the group's future plans as they are on the verge to break ground on the new album.

101D.com: There was a lot of pre-album hype for No Time To Bleed, and then when it finally came out, it's like Suicide Silence exploded – perhaps becoming one of the biggest metal bands of the year. Why do you think so Read More ...

Every week, 101D.com will highlight a new artist in our exclusive Diamonds In The Rough Series. This week, we proudly present Birds & Batteries; one helluva talented band from the Bay Area who is looking to soar through the music industry.

Background Check: The members of Birds & Batteries have spawned from the east coast, Midwest and Southern California. Thanks to the large number of former B&B members, bassist Jill Heinke found Brian Michelson and Mike Sempert by knowing the past keyboardist for the band. "Jill was brought into the band by a friend and former member, Julie Thomasson (keys), who was herself recommended by a friend and former member, Ben Thorne (bass), who plays in a band with another friend and former member, Neil Thompson (guitar)," Mike explained. The band has stayed in the same lineup for two years now and has already performed in the legendary South by Southwest festival held yearly in Austin, Texas.

justin%20timberlake5)    Justin Timberlake - Cry Me a River (2002)

"Sexyback" may have launched Timberlake to new heights as an adult artist, but it was "Cry Me a River" that set him up for such a launch. The tale of betrayal, complete with a creepy operatic sample that helped to make the beat one of Timbaland's best, wasn't subtle when it came to who it was about, and the personal nature of it made it that much more hard hitting. "Cry Me a River" was also that rare song that took advantage of Timberlake's full range as a singer. This was his most mature work up to that point, and, in my opinion, is still his best song. The video was also fantast Read More ...

Why aren't there more than two or three female artists allowed inside the top tier of country music?  While artists like Faith Hill and Martina McBride are allowed to score a periodic chart topping hit, 2008 only found Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and Heidi Newfield scoring Top 10 hits as solo artists while Sugarland took a firm grasp of a star slot on the charts and Lady Antebellum scored themselves a hit as well (with a song that featured duet-like vocals).

2009 found Swift, Underwood, Sugarland and Lady Antebellum joined by longtime star Reba McEntire and Kellie Pickler.  That's it.  Lambert and McBride also managed to get to #11 on the charts but the fact that they couldn't crack the Top 10 is revealing.  It's even more revealing when you consider that Swift and Underwood are two of the music world's biggest-selling artists.  Lambert has multiple platinum albums to her credit and Sugarland and Lady Antebellum have scored at retail as well.

So, why do female artists have such a hard time scoring radio hits?  It could be simple preferences from radio programmers, but in reality it's due to more than that.  It's partially radio testing out songs and if one person doesn't like the song, they will not play it. Or the bigger problem, that the Read More ...

Most people dream about living in a beautiful ocean front community like South Beach, Florida. The city has some of the best beaches, the hottest nightclubs and a tangy array of music that appeals to all walks of life. But just like everywhere else, there is always some melodrama that comes with the territory and if you're not Pitbull, Rick Ross or Flo Rida, then it'll be difficult for Floridian talent bubble to the mainstream. That is something Dashius Clay has noticed.

"There's a lot of politics in Miami and that's the only thing I dislike very much," the 25-year-old says. "The day somebody in Miami steps up - and I don't mean as an artist, but somebody who has their hand in the store and is able to open it for the rest of these artists - the day somebody decides to go out of the box, I think Miami will be the most recognizable and undeniable force in the world because the amount of talent you have here. You got reggae people, you got singers and you got hip-hop. If you're from Miami, you're raised by music. Everybody's life revolves around that shit."

dark%20tranquillitySwedish melodic death metal pioneers DARK TRANQUILLITY triumphantly return with We Are The Void, a scorching effort that will undoubtedly add an exhilarating new chapter to the genre's storied history. The album was mixed by the acclaimed Tue Madsen (Himsa, The Haunted) and encompasses all of the elements on which the band built their reputation: thought-provoking lyrics, shredding guitar work, captivating melodies and sheer brutality. This offering is perhaps best compared to a modern-day version of the group's revered classics The Gallery and The Mind's I, only with more intensity behind it. The blueprint of melodic metal is now at your fingertips.

We Are The Void is set for a March 9th North American release and the band are extremely proud to kick off this massive worldwide album touring cycle in the U.S. on Feb. 4th with the mighty Killswitch Engage and The Devil Wears Prada. Some of the more successful multi-day shows like Coachella and Lollapalooza rarely stray from various aspects of the alternative rock genre. Now, the recently announced 'Pop-Con' Festival showcases artists like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez as the headliners.

The event is being advertised as an 'all-day pop culture experience for tweens' and will take place at the Nassau Colisuem in Uniondale, New York on Feb. 20th.

Besides Bieber and Gomez (with her band The Scene), the kid-centric lineup includes Push Play, Care Bears on Fire, Nickelodeon’s Nat & Alex Wolff (aka The Naked Brothers Band), Mercy Mercedes and more. Additional acts will be announced in the coming weeks.

red%20hot%20chili%20peppersThe Red Hot Chili Peppers have recently been shot down from the list of finalists for the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.

Now, guitarist John Frusciante has announced early this morning through a MySpace blog post that he has quit the band, stating that his musical interests have led him in another direction.

Reportedly working on their follow up to the 2006 album 'Stadium Arcadium', the band has sparked recent rumors that Frusciante has been permanently replaced by another guitarist by the name of Josh Klinghoffer.

Klinghoffer toured with the band throughout 2007 and even appeared on Frusciante's solo album, 'The Empryean'.

Frusciante clarifies in his MySpace post that he actually left the band over a year ago when they were on indefinite hiatus.

“I really love the band and what we did,” Frusciante writes, adding that there was no drama or anger involved in his decision to leave. “Over the last 12 years, I have changed, as a person and artist, to such a degree that to do further work along the lines I did with the band would Read More ...
It's here, the list you've waited ten years for (which was difficult being that this column hasn't existed that long) - Pop Shots' Top 10 Pop Songs of the Decade!  Before getting to the list, however, I want to really quickly go over the standards for it.  Anyone could simply list the ten most popular songs based on their time on the charts, or album/single sales, and although those things should obviously play a factor in any list of this kind, I don't think they should be the only factors.  For this list, in addition to being a big hit, I wanted to make sure the songs were actually good songs, either lyric-wise, or production-wise.  I also wanted to make sure the songs had some real staying power and could easily be played 5-10 years after they were first released and still have their intended impact.  My feeling is, if they're the top ten songs of the decade, they should have some staying power in our collective pop consciousness.  That being said, here are songs 10-6 of Pop Shots' Top 10 Pop Songs of the Decade.

elton%20johnAmong the many highlights on Black Gives Way To Blue, the highly anticipated new album from ALICE IN CHAINS, is a special guest performance by Elton John. The two rock legends collaborated on the album's stunning title track, "Black Gives Way To Blue," a heart-stirring tribute to Alice In Chains' late lead singer Layne Staley. The album arrives in stores September 29.

"We were thinking about adding piano to the track and a friend suggested we call Elton," recalls guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell. "I remember laughing and saying, ‘Yeah, I'll get right on that.' But I decided it was worth trying and wrote Elton an email explaining what that song means to us—that it's a real, raw openhearted song for Layne. We sent him the track and got a call shortly after saying he thought it was beautiful and that he wanted to play on it. We were blown away. Elton John is a huge influence on me as a songwriter and having him on that song is an amazing honor for us."

One of the last times I saw my good friend, the lovely and talented Trae, I was in Worcester, Mass. It was February and I was covering a Killswitch Engage and DragonForce show in Worcester on Friday and then heading off to Boston for an early evening show featuring the same bands at a club across the street from Fenway Park, the name of which I can't recall. Yes, it was so close to Fenway I could touch the storied ballpark! It was freezing New England weather and after Trae and I spilled out into the parking lot from the backstage door after the show, she offered to give me a ride to my hotel down the block. Granted, it was a short, three-block walk, but it was late and did I mention, freezing effing cold? It also provided us with more time to chat, since we didn't see each other and have quality face time as often as I'd have liked! We sat in her vehicle, as she warmed it up. We talked, as she was getting ready to move to California. I knew I'd miss her, since I made about three to four trips to the Worcester area each year for work and we always got to hang when I did, but was happy to see her make this move. briansetzerFormer Stray Cats member, Brian Setzer, collapsed last night after walking off the stage not long after beginning his show at Isleta Casino in Albuquerque, NM.

Setzer is currently on his annual Christmas tour with the Brian Setzer Orchestra. According to Albuquerque television station KOB, Setzer appeared “shakey” as he left the stage. He was rushed to Heart Hospital of New Mexico but has since been discharged.

His official website mentions nothing about the incident and still lists his tour date scheduled for Phoenix, Ariz. tonight. No statement has been given as to whether or not the show is set to be canceled. As of right now he is still set to perform.

One concertgoer, Mike Anderson, told RadarOnline.com that the former Stray Cats frontman became visibly ill-looking 20 minutes into his show.

"Suddenly, he turned to his right and fell to his hands and knees before laying his guitar down on the stage and walking shakily away towards the right. We could see people at the side of the stage help him to the nearby stairway and he looked very shaken-up."

The induction ceremony takes place March 15 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, and will be broadcast live on the Fuse network.

Other nominees included KISS, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donna Summer, Darlene Love and LL Cool J. Record mogul David Geffen and songwriters Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry, Jesse Stone, Mort Shuman and Otis Blackwell were also inducted in non-performing categories.

Talking to Rolling Stone, Iggy Pop of the Stooges said, "We've been rejected seven times, and we would have set a record, I think, if it happened again. It started to feel like Charlie Brown and the football. I had about two hours of a strong emotional reaction after hearing the news. It felt like vindication. In 1958, a group of record executives, alarmed by the explosive success of rock 'n' roll - and the threat rock posed to "quality" pop - launched the Grammy Awards. Their aim: to cultivate a higher standard of popular taste.

Are the Grammys a marketing ploy to increase record sales? Back when the 70s rock bands were in their prime, they did not receive the awards. I'd say the award giveaways in the past decade (Carlos Santana getting eight for example) are a way to make up for ignoring them 25 years before.

The Grammy (and similar awards) has about as much to do with music as a convention of insurance agents, it's about money, exclusively. No musical criteria involved. It's a love-fest for the major label recording industry but has no relevance to the fragmented nature of people's actual musical tastes. In real-life, I see it as de-regulation in the form of iPods, MP3 downloads, and band-created niche markets.

The way the process is described doesn’t provide much detail. Record companies and individuals may submit recordings to be nominated. The entries are entered online and then a physical copy of the product must be sent to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Once a work is entered, reviewing sessions are held by ov Read More ...

John began work on the songs that were to become the first Title Tracks album in January 2008, as the unhappy fate of Georgie James became clear to him. By the time that Georgie James officially split up in the summer of 2008, John had an album's worth of songs ready to go and began playing shows with a new group behind him by the end of that summer.

"It Was Easy" is the debut full-length from Title Tracks, John's solo project. It contains nine original songs and two covers (Bruce Springsteen's "Tougher Than The Rest" and The Byrds' "She Don't Care About Time"). The originals run the spectrum from the taut, angry "Every Little Bit Hurts," "Found Out" (both of which, in different recordings, were released as a single on Dischord Records in April 2009) and "Piles Of Paper" to the sunnier "Hello There" and "Steady Love" to the melancholy "At Fifteen," "No, Girl" and the title track. As people go about making their holiday plans this early week of December, it's time to reflect a little bit about the newcomers to country music this year.  It seems to me that this year rivals that of the vaunted "class of 1989" that contained Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Clint Black, among some others.  And while the big acts 20 years ago were solo artists, country music's biggest newcomers for 2009 were groups.  Lady Antebellum and Zac Brown Band may have started out in 2008 but both acts exploded in 2009 with two chart-toppers this year while their fantastic debut albums scored platinum statuses and were handed a boatload of industry awards, along with garnering recent Grammy nominees.

rage%20against%20the%20machineIn an attempt to prevent this year's 'X Factor' winner going straight to the top slot, a Facebook campaign to send Rage Against The Machine's 1993 hit 'Killing in the Name Of' has so far swelled to many members.

Over 550,000 people have joined the Facebook group, which urges members to download 'Killing In The Name' on Sunday (December 13) to prevent the Christmas Number One being held by the show's winner for the fifth year in a row.

Jon Morter, who started the Facebook group with his wife Tracy, defended the campaign, telling NME.COM it was a "rallying cry" for people who didn't want to see the show dominate the charts again this Christmas.

Because of the groundswell of support, bookies have installed the track as the favorite to gain the Christmas number two slot, ahead of Susan Boyle, Robbie Williams, Lady GaGa and Leona Lewis.

Responding to criticism that Rage Against The Machine track was released by label behind The X Factor, Sony, Morter suggested that people were taking things too seriously.

With the recent shift in power from record labels to concert promoters, music artists see performing at large universities like Arizona State a perfect outlet for exposure and securing a paycheck that is not negotiable.

Christopher Shearer, Assistant Director for Concert Series Department at ASU, said that the demand for artists to play at the university is extremely high. “We get emails daily from booking agents with bands that are trying to make it,” he said. “Usually we contact the headliner names ourselves but supporting acts are trying to get the exposure that ASU or any major university could generate for them.”

In the past couple of years, the Programming and Activities Board at ASU has attracted major artists like Ben Folds, Say Anything and Taking Back Sunday to perform for students. Since universities have a given budget every year for entertainment, the Concert Series Department is able to provide these free events for students.

Lesser known artists agree to play for free at ASU to take advantage of a large audience they wouldn’t have been able to generate had they charged admission at a venue. The uni Read More ...
BlinkAn unauthorized film about pop punkers Blink-182 is in the works.

The film will be directed by California filmmaker Brandon Flores, who is working with a limited budget of $55,000. The movie is tentatively titled 'Blink' and will be based around the early days of the band. Set to begin shooting in April, Flores as inspired to make the film after the reunion tour this summer.

The film follows the adventures of Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus and original drummer Scott Raynor as they start a band (in DeLonge's garage), begin playing shows and slowly earn a fanbase. It also documents their struggles — including Raynor's exit in 1998 — and ends with DeLonge and Hoppus meeting Travis Barker, forming the Blink that millions of fans know and love today.

Determined to make the film as accurate as possible, Flores and his friends have spent the majority of the year interviewing fans who were at Blink's early shows, and they count Mark's sister Anne's 2001 band bio 'Tales From Beneath Your Mom' as inspiration for the movie

While the band isn't tied to the production, 24-year-old Flores said that he hopes to Read More ...
It's hard to believe that it'll be five years since the tragic, senseless, and "it still hurts" death of Pantera and Damageplan guitarist, metal legend and all around nice guy, Dimebag Darrell. The anniversary – I don't even like using that word, simply because annivs are usually something you celebrate and this is not an event I enjoy- is next week, December 8.

My eyes are welling up with tears as I type this, because Dime's loss is such a senseless one, and even though I had interviewed him three or four times and met him twice, the second of which he put his arm around me in a secure, warm hug as we posed for a photo…he always seemed so reachable and so real. That's because he was. He had to be. You don't fake that kind of positive energy. Maybe it's the Texas thing. Maybe it's the artist that was within him. Maybe he was just a real nice fucking guy. Maybe it was just a combo of all of those things. I am inclined to believe it was.

Located on the St. Paul side of the Twin Cities in Minnesota, the McNally-Smith School of Music provides students a sanctuary for those who strive to be in the industry. Director of Career Development, Debbie Sandridge, spends roughly six hours with each student when securing an internship in the field. A former A&R rep for artists like Diana Ross and Ice Cube, Sandridge believes it's essential to make connections and stay on top of the rapidly changing technology.  "I think it's wonderful that people want to get their music out and be heard, and utilize the internet," she said. "That's a part of this industry that won't change. Everybody's looking for somebody to hear them and discover them."

Groudbreaking for the A&R division, Debbie noted that the process of finding fresh talent has completely evolved with social media. "There are still a lot of unanswered questions for everybody in this business on how we're going to help this transition that's going to flow," she said. "This education here along with critical thinking, knowing how to utilize technology and be in know will provide answers."

For pop-punk, New Found Glory's self-titled album from 2000 helped define the genre, inspire the formation of bands everywhere, and pave the way for the success of groups such as Fall Out Boy.  Now, a decade later, the CD+DVD New Found Glory (10th Anniversary Edition) (Geffen/UMe), released January 26, 2010, brings together that original album, seven previously unreleased or rare bonus tracks, and the 2002 DVD documentary The Story So Far, which featured all of the band's music videos to that date plus concert footage, interviews, and more.  The package also includes revealing new liner notes from each band member and the album's producer Neal Avron (Fall Out Boy, Everclear, Good Charlotte, Yellowcard).

ODBRussell Tyrone Jones aka Ol' Dirty Bastard simultaneously brought a measure of humor and a touch of the absurd to the Wu-Tang Clan. Often noted for his unusual microphone technique, Jones' stage name came from a 1980 kung fu fi lm entitled Ol' Dirty & The Bastard, the relevance of which was articulated by Method Man's assertion that there was "no father" to Jones' style. After establishing the Wu-Tang Clan, Ol' Dirty Bastard went on to a successful solo career. However, his professional success was hampered by his erratic personal behavior and frequent legal troubles, including incarceration He died in late 2004 of an accidental drug overdose only two days before his 36th birthday.

ODB's solo career began in 1995, making him the third member of the Wu-Tang Clan to release a solo album, following GZA's 1991 debut, Words from the Genius, and Method Man's 1994 effort Tical. adam%20lambert* Adam Lambert, and the person who booked him for the American Music Awards, are geniuses. The AMA people had to have known Lambert was going to do something shocking, which would make the AMAs a talking point for days after it aired, and at the same time, Lambert had to know the AMAs would be the perfect venue to officially shed his "American Idol contestant" tag and become a star on his own. Why mention Idol when you can now mention Lambert's gay kiss and fully-clothed simulated oral sex? Some foolish commentators are calling the decrying of Lambert's gay kiss a double standard as there was little offense taken when Madonna, Britney and Christina locked lips on TV a handful of years ago. limpbizkitYesterday Fred Durst announced through his Twitter page that his metal group Limp Bizkit will be releasing their first album in nearly five years.

Due in early 2010 through Interscope/Polydor, Limp Bizkit will release the new 'Gold Cobra' album.

"We will slowly be revealing the meaning of the title over the next few weeks," frontman Fred Durst told Kerrang! magazine. "Cobras are quite venomous. I wish it were a much longer, more ridiculous title, but 'Gold Cobra' is as ridiculous as we're going to get right now.

While the last album 'The Unquestionable Truth Part 1' was released in 2005, this will be the band's first release with the original lineup since 2000's 'Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water'.

Durst recently told NME.com, "I'm having a great feeling about going in and doing [the new Limp Bizkit CD], more than I have about any of our albums before. It's not going to be a watered-down version of Limp Bizkit, it's going to be a more explosive, more addictive, more driven version of Limp Bizkit."

I always get told in the Journalism school that blogging is the ‘future of journalism’. Bloggers have started making headlines and breaking news faster than most major sources. Does that necessarily mean that it’s accurate and trusted info? No. Does it mean that a blogger’s post may cross into the truth and jeporadize a journalist? Yeshh.

Blogs are much like tabloid magazines. They are mostly ridiculous and occasionally report accurate obscure stories before they hit major headlines.

It’s like in “Men in Black” when Tommy Lee Jones tells Will Smith to read tabloids for research. Part of the plot in “Men in Black” rests on the idea that tabloid newspapers provide actual evidence that helps the government track down and capture troublesome aliens. Despite the interference comedy, this raises the question as to whether “Men in Black” was bankrolled by the National Enquirer or some other related outfit. The implication that tabloids and trash television may contain even a seed of truth is a possibility too dangerous to even fathom. Do we not already have enough crazies running around saying they have found Aquaman??

Or maybe we don’t have enough…
