According the As Hell Retreats bassist Taylor Jones, the Christian music scene has varied views within itself on what seems to be acceptable to question, especially regarding personal faith.  Though he's the newest member of this band, Jones fits into the mix without a hitch and he's been privy to the touring scene and what messages are being sent and received. This band doesn't skirt around raising questions about their own place in faith, or faith in general, but sometimes that stance raises a few eyebrows.  Their new album, Revival, is no exception.

"Most of our songs on this record are about Christianity and religion," Jones says with a tone of the obvious. "But we have a song called ‘Poor God' that discusses how sometimes we feel like religion isn't there for us and people think that's an edgy song to have."

As Hell Retreats began roughly five years ago, with some independent releases under their belt before Strikefirst Records, a subsidiary of Christian metal powerhouse Facedown records, signed them.  Jones had known the other members for some time, so when they needed a new bassi Read More ...
ozzy%20osbourneAfter kicking off this week with the death of Paul Gray, bassist of Slipknot, we wrap up this tragic week with a little bit of lightheartedness. While doing some promotion for his upcoming album, "Scream," the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne, decided to have some fun with some unsuspecting tourists at the wax museum, Madame Tussauds, in Times Square in New York.

Ozzy sat still on a bench in the museum as tourists approached what they thought was a wax figure of Ozzy, only to sit or stand next to him for a picture, when all of a sudden, Ozzy would lunge and scream at the tourists, and hilarity ensues.  There was double shock with some people as they were first freaked out by the fact that the wax figure was indeed a real life person, but the second wave of shock hit when they realized that it was in fact, Ozzy Osbourne, sitting there.

A video was shot of the prank, where Ozzy kicks it off by yelling, "I'm here to scare the shit out of my faaaaanss!" And in true comic fashion, we watch a stream of tourists get scared by the Prince of Darkness. The video has garnered just over ha Read More ...

james%20ottoWith Memorial Day this coming Monday (May 31, 2010) it's the official kick-off to the summer season and as always it seems that country radio has stuck to their formula for how songs should be played seasonally.  In the fall/winter months we are given more ballads about love and loss and everything in between, in the spring and summer we're given fun little 'ditties' that are designed to be nothing more than enjoyable, sing-a-long worthy tunes perfect for the perfect party atmosphere.

This year it seems if Nashville artists and labels are particularly pushing the 'fun' quotient a bit more as there are quite a few "summer songs."  There are actually three current singles with the word 'summer' in the title.  One, James Otto's "Groovy Little Summer Song" goes even further.  Olsen's "Summer Thing" and LoCash Cowboy's "Here Comes Summer" are the two other summer title songs and both are the debut singles from said artists.

Sometimes tragedy brings people together and sometimes it's just meant to be.  In the case of the prog rock experimental band A Hope for Home, their formation was a product of fate and faith, both underscored by the final wishes of a close friend.

Guitarist and co-vocalist Matt Ellis recalls the band's beginnings. "We all started out in local bands in high school.  I stopped playing music and went off to college, but the guy who I was always playing guitar with called me up and said he had terminal cancer. He said I should move home so we could start a new band. I suddenly felt like I would much rather be playing music, and that's what I was supposed to do.  So, I moved back home and we started A Hope for Home."

Once Ellis returned, the band did what was necessary to accommodate their friend Kyle so he could participate in the early writing process.  "We wrote all of our first songs with him while we were packed in this tiny little room in his house.  He was hooked up to morphine.  Basically half of our first album was with him. He died a couple months later, and things were a little crazy, but Read More ...
Playlist culture is what we are and what we have evolved into. Instantly, you get what you want, when you want it. While I am a big fan of being in control of what assaults my senses, there's also an argument to be made for spontaneity and discovery. If you are always in control of your own destiny, then where's chance? Where's possibility? Where's unearthing something you didn't already know, because no matter how much you think you know, you've always got room to learn the things that you don't know. Fact. Know it. Live it. Accept it. Learn it.

FarBut when I heard the term "playlist culture," I realized that it's not a nugget of truth lying within the statement, but that it's the whole truth. While driving to work the other day, I slipped At Night We Live, the brand new album by Far, one of my favorite  bands ever. It's their first since 1998. I had the record in my tote bag for two very specific reasons: to listen to it in my car and to import it into my iTunes and thus, my iPod, for instant portability. I followed through with my every intention to listen to the album Read More ...
nasThis week, three tracks leaked featuring the divine combo of emcee and femme fatale on the hook. With the summer heat slowly inching its way into our lives, here are three songs to throw on the iPod ASAP:

T.I. feat. Keri Hilson: Got Your Back
Tip returns on this keys-heavy track is very Pop forward with Miss Keri Baby lacing the hook as T.I. spits like he never left. Atlanta represented hard on this one.

Estelle feat. Nas: Fall In Love
This is actually Estelle's track, but there's enough Nas to give it a fair shot. Reminiscent of "American Boy" with Kanye West, this breezy track is nothing short of romantic.

Drake feat. Alicia Keys: Fireworks
Another leak off 'Thank Me Late', this track holds Drake rapping in the same cadence as "Successful" with Alicia Keys on the intense hook. Drake keeps them coming; we'll thank him later.

In other news, Dr. Dre's 'Detox' is near completion, Rap-Up reports. However, according to Scott Storch - who worked with Dre on 'Chronic 2001' and 'Detox' - this album will sound nothing like a previous Dre release. What that means remains to Read More ...
slipknotFollowing the tragic death of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray on Monday, the eight remaining members of Slipknot, along with Gray's widow and brother, held a press conference yesterday to discuss the situation. The band sat together, without their masks on for the first time in public, and sadly and recollected their fallen brethren, soft-spoken, and choking back tears.

Frontman Corey Taylor summed up the best way he could, saying Gray, "was everything that was wonderful about this band and about this group of people. The only way I can sum up Paul Gray is ‘love'. Everything he did, he did for everyone around him whether he knew you or not ... and that's what he left behind for us, is absolute love," Taylor said. "I will miss him with every fiber of my heart. He was the best of us."

Percussionist M. Shawn Crahan said, "It's very important that everybody on the outside of us understands that Paul Gray was the essence of the band Slipknot, and Paul was there from the very, very, very beginning." Crahan continued, "Paul loved the fans. He was kind of the person in the band that really wanted ev Read More ...
Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from why Miley Cyrus shouldn't be anywhere near your mouth, to why Justin Bieber might be at the BET awards, to why two 80's icons have been spending a lot of time in hospital beds, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

miley%20cyrus* This just in - you don't want to put Miley in your mouth! Yes, Britney Spears needs to move aside because Miley Cyrus has a whole new kind of "Toxic" for the kids as last week Wal-Mart had to pull an entire line of Miley Cyrus-brand necklaces and bracelets from its shelves after tests performed for The Associated Press found the jewelry contained high levels of the toxic metal cadmium. According to the AP, cadmium in jewelry is not known to be dangerous if the items are simply worn, but concerns come when a person bites or sucks on the jewelry. So no more biting or sucking on Miley until further notice!

foxy%20brownWith the rise of Nicki Minaj, it seems as though female emcees are making a resurgence; with female rap legends even coming back to partake in the renaissance. Former rivals Foxy Brown and Lil' Kim have both leaked some freestyles/tracks, and more photos and live footage are circulating of Hip-Hop queen Lauryn Hill flirting with the idea of a comeback. However, these past few days placed a few rumors on the mill that have proven to be nothing more than that.

We first reported that Foxy Brown was rumored to be starting a formal beef with Nicki Minaj. As of yet that is complete hearsay, which may or may not be good for Foxy Brown, who has dropped off the radar for a while now. That rumor was only the tip of the iceberg. The next came from various rap outlets reporting that Lil' Kim has signed to Roc Nation and Jay-Z will be the Executive Producer of Kim's next project. This news was prematurely reported, as now there is no other information available. Some news sources are backpedaling on the story since the follow-up is slim. There was also no confirmation as to whether Read More ...
paul%20grayThe Devil must need a new band, because it seems he's cashing in his chips to get a pretty kick-ass lineup in Hell. First he grabbed drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan from Avenged Sevenfold. Then the deaths of singers Peter Steel from Type O Negative and Ronnie James Dio followed. At this point the only position still needed in the Devil's New Band is a guitarist. Yesterday Slipknot bassist, Paul Gray, aka #2 or The Pig, was found dead in a hotel room in Iowa at the age of 38.

No many details have emerged at this point, including the cause of death, although police on the scene did say there was no evidence of foul play. The investigation is ongoing. An autopsy is scheduled for today, according to Urbandale police Sgt. Dave Disney. Gray was found alone, apparently dead. Police would not disclose whether there was anything of interest in Gray's room, although from local news video, one could see police carrying out a bass guitar case and some clothing.

Rumors circling the internet point to drug overdose, as Gray has battled with heavy drugs in the past, including heroin and cocaine. I Read More ...
diddyHate him or loathe him, you're angry because you have no choice but to respect him. Entreprenuer/Executive Producer/Rapper/Actor Sean "Diddy" Combs has proved without a shadow of a doubt that he can't stop; because he won't stop. Never before has there been a figure in the music industry that people can't put a finger on why they dislike a person, only to dance to all of his hits at a party. Yes, not even 50.

To me, Diddy is in the Top 5 hardest working people in Hip-Hop History, from start to current career position. Russell Simmons is also in that Top 5 just to give you a clue to the seriousness of such a statement. Diddy played his position until he had the power to make his position. He went from intern to label owner, from sidekick to frontman, from rapper to actor, from actor to television producer, from clothing to cologne to alcoholic beverages. Just imagine if he stopped. He can't now.

slashSlash has announced that he will be performing a whole slew of older material from his long history on his upcoming tour, including songs from Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver, Slash's Snakepit and music from his new solo album.

Slash credits Myles Kennedy, the vocalist who will be in his touring band, as the reasoning behind the song selections. "He's such an amazing vocalist," Slash said recently. "He can handle all that ‘cause he's got a great range. So I'm really excited, ‘cause before I talked to him, I was auditioning singers for this tour and I figured I'd get it together, but he's just, he's so perfect."

You can get a taste of Myles Kennedy on Slash's new solo album, which features an all-star lineup of special guests, ala Santana's "Supernatural" album. Kennedy sings two songs, "Starlight" and "Back From Cali," and does a phenomenal job on both songs.

I can personally vouch for Kennedy, as I was in attendance at the Roxy in Hollywood, where Slash debuted his new touring band. The club was packed, the crowd was crazy and the Slash-Kennedy duo, while nowhere near the Axl Read More ...
drakeWhile his June 15th release date for 'Thank Me Later' is still holding steady, Drake released a track list late last week for his upcoming debut. 'Thank Me Later' will feature collaborations with Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Young Jeezy, T.I., Swizz Beatz, The-Dream, and Young Money affiliates Nicki Minaj and big boss Lil Wayne. 'Thank Me Later' boasts production from Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, Timbaland, and of course ace production collaborator Matthew "Boi-1da" Samuels. Samuels provided Drake with the album's lead single "Over", along with Drake's previous breakout single "Best I Ever Had" and super collaboration "Forever" with Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem. Boi-1da is present more than once on 'TML' with the Young Jeezy assisted "Unforgettable" (co-production with Noah "40" Shebib) and "Miss Me" with Lil Wayne (also co-produced by 40). Every week, 101D.com will highlight up-and-coming talent in our exclusive Diamonds In The Rough series. This week, we proudly present Bolo. The Bad Newz, VA-based rapper is all about making the type of music that makes money, but first and foremost, music that relates to people.

Background Check: Bolo is an emcee from Newport News, VA, "otherwise known as Bad Newz, VA," he explains. The surrounding area has been the home to such superstars as Timbaland, Pharrell, Missy Elliot, and Allen Iverson. Drawn to the microphone from a young age, Bolo says music has been a constant in his life. "No matter what I go through in life, I always come back to music." Having an older brother who was an emcee and a DJ served as an inspiration for Bolo, who notes "I started rapping and making beats with his DJ equipment. Then I started going to the local parties he would DJ at and I would rock the crowd." It didn't take long before a career was born.

the%20rootsThe Legendary Roots Crew revealed the tracklisting for their ninth studio album 'How I Got Over.' Surprisingly, it's the ninth album and only nine songs. The album, due out June 22nd, is their long-awaited release since catapulting to superstardom as the house band for the surprisingly successful Jimmy Fallon Show. The Roots can probably do a lot with nine songs, but for a band that large (as of right now at least), they could also do a double disc set with a DVD attached. Perhaps they are super busy and decided to cut it short, or they wanted to keep within the "nine" number theme a la Erykah Badu. Years back, the Roots never changed the numbering of the songs from album to album and just kept going in numerical order (for example, 'Organix' began with Track #1 and 'Things Fall Apart' began with Track #54). We'll see what happens with 'How I Got Over.' Here is the final tracklist:

1. Walk Alone
2. Dear God 2.0
3. Radio Daze
4. Now Or Never
5. How I Got Over
6. The Day

toby%20keithIn my last column I talked about how people are finding success via independent means or independent labels.  Recently Nashville lost a major label. Lyric Street Records as it was folded into parent company Disney Music Group's Burbank, CA offices as all but some of the staffers who promote singles to radio were cut loose.   The label, which was around for over a decade, let Sarah Buxton, The Parks and Love and Theft out of their contracts.  This whole development is much like the corporate mergers of the last fifteen years or so as the Music industry struggles to change their model from the successful album-driven profit margins to streamlined 360 artist-development driven models.

Independent record labels like Toby Keith's Show Dog Universal have lead the way in this regard as they take a cut out of everything an artist does, from their publishing to their touring right down to each t-shirt or belt buckle an artist sells.  While on the surface this would seem 'bad' for artists who largely made their living off of tour revenue, it really isn't so bad if you think abou Read More ...

In 2004, Jonny Santos left the fame and the glory of his grammy-nominated band Spineshank to pursue a different direction with his musical endevours - something less industrial and something more thrashy. What he didn't realize was how difficult the road would be to get there. Starting virtually from scratch with his new musical vision, he started Silent Civilian. Immediately, it was riddled with lineup changes. Then the band was dropped from their label - Corporate Punishment Records - before they even released an album.

Silent Civilian finally released their debut album Rebirth of the Temple in 2006 through Mediaskare Records. This album was far more aggressive than anything Spineshank had released up until that point. Following a relentless touring cycle, Santos took some time off to recharge his batteries only to find himself battling his personal demons again, losing his house, his car and his girl, and traveling thousands of miles with his dog to a friend's front step for somewhere to live. He worked through his issues and now, is prepping the band's newest release.

I often ruminate here - hence, "Retto's Rumination" as the title of this column - on how we've all become slaves to the digital realm. That we have electronic handcuffs in the form of Smart phones like Blackberries, iPhones, Palm Pres and any other assorted gadgets that allow us instant access to information, our friends and families and those we elect to talk to. I decided to spend the entire weekend with my new puppy Higgins, who is fostering at my dad's, who has no Internet connection anymore. He got a virus on his Dell computer a few years ago, so he doesn't have the need for a wireless router or even the web. I could pull out a phone cord and plug it into the phone, but I'm probably nixing that option to head over the Starbucks or Panera Bread for a snack to borrow their free wireless while I nibble and while Higgs naps in the new fluffy bed I bought for him. Since the Flyers won the seventh game of the semi-finals and are playing in the conference finals, which starts Sunday night when I am writing this, I am going to stay here longer to spend more time with the puppy and be around hockey playoff atmosphere while it's at blazing levels in Philly.

I made this plan in my head, while I was connectivity-free and even though I have my handheld, which I am still receivin Read More ...
Guru%20and%20SolarAs anticipated yesterday, the snippet that leaked of Doo Wop dissing Solar has been made a full out track. Doo Wop enlists Minneapolis emcee T.O.N.Y. on the track called "We Got Gunz". Doo Wop speaks at great length in his verse about the Solar situation, discussing how Guru asked everyone to be nice to Solar even when they had a bad feeling about him. He also mentions in the verse that he tried to pull Guru away from Solar. Former Guru publicist Dennis Paredes sent the track around with the following message:

"As Guru's once former publicist, I send this email with pleasure and a deeper sentiment that can only be explained by the grinding of my teeth every time I think of the entire situation. Doo Wop is accompanied by T.O.N.Y. from Minneapolis on this very personal song, allowing Doo Wop to express another side of him that is rarely shown. I attest to the first few bars Doo Wop rhymes":

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. For this week's edition of Pop Shots I'm going to be taking a look at an addiction that is sweeping the nation, and by the nation I mean my living room, but I know if it's in my living room it's probably in many of yours, as well. That addiction is teen TV. It started innocently enough in the 90's with Saved By The Bell, where we learned the dangers of caffeine pills and that school dances should be held a minimum of 50 times a semester. In 2010, however, with Nickelodeon having it's own teen oriented channel, and Disney making teen oriented programs, as well, the airwaves are loaded with teen TV. With that in mind, this week I'm taking a look at three teen TV shows that are actually pretty good, and qualify as reasons I don't have a DVR, because I did, and I was recording these programs, I'm fairly sure I'd be put on a list of some kind.

isisWell it's been a heavy week in the metal world, with Dio passing away Sunday morning and now experimental progressive metal band Isis is calling it quits after a solid 13 year career. The band issued a lengthy statement recently discussing the decision. The following is an excerpt from that statement.

"Isis has reached an end. It's hard to try to say it in any delicate way, and it is a truth that is best spoken plainly. This end isn't something that occurred over night and it hasn't been brought about by a single cataclysmic fracture in the band. Simply put, Isis has done everything we wanted to do, said everything we wanted to say."

"In the interest of preserving the love we have of this band, for each other, for the music made and for all the people who have continually supported us, it is time to bring it to a close. We've seen too many bands push past the point of a dignified death and we all promised one another early on in the life of the band that we would do our best to ensure Isis would never fall victim to that syndrome."

dj%20doo%20wopA snippet of a song leaked yesterday where renown DJ and Gang Starr affiliate Doo Wop dropped a few bars against Solar in what sounds like a freestyle. Several rappers have fired off against Solar, but one from Doo Wop is far more personal given his relationship with both Guru and DJ Premier.

The track, called "We Got Gunz," is a short recap of his first encounter with Solar. "I don't claim to be the best judge of character, but fam I'm decent / When we first met, something told me you're a piece of sh*t" Doo Wop raps within the first few bars. "I've never seen a 5-percenter so demonic," Doo Wop continues, taking stabs at Solar's 5-percent beliefs and his use of the word "peace." Doo Wop spoke a bit on the radio and via Twitter about his feelings toward Solar, but taking it to song is a whole other level. Whether or not this will be a fully released song remains to be seen, but judging by the intensity in the small snippet, Doo Wop still has quite a bit to say.

soulflyFormer Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera has returned with "Omen," the seventh studio album from his current band, Soulfly. The entire album is streaming right now!

'Omen' will be unleashed May 25th via Roadrunner Records, and features all the brutality, tribal percussion, nasty leads and thunder you've come to love from Max Cavalera and his crew.

"'Omen' is really violent in terms of the lyrics and the music," says Cavalera. "I think this record brings fans closer to Soulfly than ever before. It's got every element that people loved from the last two albums. It's all there, but it goes beyond that. People that liked "Conquer" are going to love "Omen" because there are a couple more surprises."

One of those surprises is special guest Greg Puciato, frontman of Dillinger Escape Plan, who trades off screams with Cavalera on the lead track, "Rise of the Fallen."

ice%20tOn my journey to bring Hip-Hop Reform to rap music, each step was met with a new obstacle. Not that there isn't anything grand about rap, because there are some great things in motion. However, I would be a fool to believe that these bright spots have enough light to shine through the dark patches.

Rap music is 32-years-old and it is ever changing. Each generation has its own story to tell or its own story handed to them. And since everybody wants to tell their story, everybody needs an alias. From Ice T to Soulja Boy, Kool Moe Dee to Mos Def, LL Cool J to Memphis Bleek, the alias is the first branding opportunity artists have. Your alias is a sign of your times. It's sacred. And it is so much a symbol that simply by changing your alias, you often leave behind the stained image of it. With that being said, today, it has become apparent that new rappers are running out of aliases.

Just the other day, an email came across my inbox with the name of a new artist: POPCORN. Really?! Another email came through that introduced YOUNG RIOT. Another rapper called himself, Jigga. Really?! Read More ...

dioThis was a pretty sad weekend for the heavy metal world, as we lost one of the forefathers, Ronnie James Dio, of stomach cancer at the age of 67.

It began as more of an online rumor late Saturday night, with Twitter and Facebook exploding with "news" of his death, only to be later squelched by Wendy Dio, wife of RJD. But at 7:45am Sunday morning, it was confirmed by her via Dio's official website, where the following statement from Wendy was the only thing posted:

"Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever. "

Now the heavy metal world has come out full force to remember the late Ronnie James Dio, and the following are all quotes from his closest friends, bandmates, colleagues and those who knew Dio best. We begin wit Read More ...
TimbalandVH1 announced today that super-producer Timbaland will be honored at the first Hip-Hop Honors dedicated to the Dirty South. The special, which will air on Monday, June 7th at 9PM, is the first time in Hip-Hop Honors' seven-year run that one region will be dedicated for its music. The Dirty South has been an ongoing force in Hip-Hop for years, and VH1 felt it necessary to host an award show honoring the South's contributions. However, many feel a certain way about Hip-Hop Honors in general and therefore will not be present for this historical event. VIBE reported that Uncle Luke made some remarks about the ceremony after hearing that he would only be honored as a member of 2 Live Crew and not for his solo contributions to Hip-Hop.

"For an organization like VH1 to try to say I'm just the first person to go to the Supreme Court over music censorship and be a part of the 2 Live Crew...I told them the other day, 'Just go f**k yourself,'" Luke said. swordThere's a lot of bands in the sludgy, doomy Black-Sabbath-like new school of heavy metal, but not many of them have opened for Metallica already, nor are they being praised by old-school grandpas and hipster kids alike. Hailing form Austin, TX, The Sword, is the band I'm taking about and they recently spoke out on their upcoming third album, "Warp Riders" which is due to crash down on our heads August 24th via Kemado Records.

'Warp Riders' is to be the band's first release working with an outside producer (Matt Bayles, whose worked with Pearl Jam, Mastodon and Isis) and it's also the band's first concept album. And according to the band it's shaping up to be thunderously epic, both lyrically and musically.

"This is what you'd technically call a 'concept album,' though I'd describe it as more of a soundtrack to a story I came up with," says The Sword guitarist/vocalist John "J.D." Cronise. "All the songs are aspects of the story, but they don't cover every detail from beginning to end. It's a science fiction story, and it deals heavily with themes of light and dark and perce Read More ...
EminemThis is the kind of news that can have hip-hop fans in a total frenzy. After collaborating last year on the Renegade Edition of DJ Hero, Jay-Z and Eminem have announced that they will be performing together for a pair of shows in both of their hometowns. Eminem made the official announcement at Game Two of the NY Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers game in Detroit [surprisingly not on Twitter] on Wednesday [May 12th]. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime set of shows, and I know we're both really going to bring it to our hometowns," Eminem told the baseball fans. "The fans are going to love this and so am I. It's going to be historic."

Per AllHipHop.com, on September 2nd, the first Jay-Z/Eminem performance will happen in Detroit's Comerica Park. A few weeks later [date to be announced], Jay and Em will be the first artists to ever perform in the new Yankees Stadium in the Bronx. While Jay-Z is from Brooklyn (not the Bronx), the union of New York and Detroit is still something to be marked in hip-hop history. A performance of "Renegade" [off Jay-Z's ‘The Blueprint'] will obviously be in the cards.

billy%20yatesWith the music world changing and record labels seemingly turning more into promotional partners than they ever have been in the past, there are some artists out there that have been working as independent artists for years now.  In country music one of those artists is Billy Yates.  He's released eight albums in his career.  Only one of those, his first release from 1997, came on a major label. The rest came on his own label called M.O.D. Record Label or "My Own Damn Record Label."  Billy has been such a success that he released a "Favorites" album in 2006.

His eighth album, released last summer, is Bills Barber Shop and it finds the singer/songwriter (who has had cuts by everyone from George Jones to Chris Young) firmly in his 'neo-traditionalist' groove.  There is literally something for every kind of country fan, from those who love great story songs like the title track, Strait-like tracks like "Tell Me I Was Wrong" to fun, partyin' types of songs like "One Beer A Day"  and "Margarita Meltdown."  Billy's been so successful with his self-released record Read More ...
gucci%20maneAfter a six month sentence, Gucci Mane was released from prison yesterday [May 12] shortly after midnight. The rapper was greeted by friends and family, including rapper/friend, Shawty Lo. Gucci's statement to the press was as follows:

"Unfortunately, my incarceration also came at a pivotal point in my career, just as my first major label album was dropping. I was forced to miss what should have been one of the proudest moments of my life. This is something that I will make sure never happens again. My time in jail was trying, but I grew from it and am now a stronger and better person. I want to continue on a positive track and truly focus on being a role model to my fans and my community. I am looking towards the future with a newfound respect and appreciation for the law and a strong dedication to my music and my career."

Per Rap-Up.com, Gucci Mane is planning his next album 'The Appeal' for a late summer release and will be performing at NY station Hot 97's Summer Jam on June 6.

Upon calling Big L, CEO of U Digg Music Group, his voicemail appears charming at first. A woman with a British accent politely asks you to leave a message at the beep. She then curses you out if you plan on calling Big L for something other than being about your business.

While many associate the name Big L with the legendary rapper that we lost eons before we should have, this Big L has been a vital part of hip-hop for several years. Having worked with UGK since the early days and currently pushing Gucci Mane, OJ Da Juiceman and a whole slew of new artists, Big L is undoubtedly one of the reasons why Hip-Hop is still a moneymaking business.

A seasoned veteran in the game, Big L can spot talent that will not only circulate music, but also circulate money. He stays busy making moves until the wee hours of the morning, taking brief moments for power naps and maintaining his perfect beard. So this weekend I got a new boyfriend. He's a four-legged tub of wrinkles named Higgins H. Anselmo-Sciarretto. He's an English bulldog, brindle/marble coloring and only 11-weeks-old, born on February 16 in Oklahoma. He is the newest love of my life. Adopting him was good for my heart and my soul, as his. Having the added responsibility of caring for him, of considering him with many of my daily decisions has really lifted my spirits and given me a new perspective. He's also a wrinkly, soft pile of love.  I spend every day of the weekend with him. I cleared the decks of all my plans this weekend. For him. For us.

He is currently fostering at my dad's, who is housebreaking him and keeping him company while I work on getting the bylaws of the condo that I own changed. I am writing a heartfelt letter, seeking legal counsel and working to make this change happen, for his sake and mine. He is the cutest dog in the world; so cute in fact that my dad even said that he could poop the size of a Rottweiler in the house and he could not get mad at him, simply because he is so cute.

So how does this relate to music? Well besides the fact that I named him after Henry Higgins from My Fair Lady, the professor who helped bring out the lady in Eliza Doolittle, and after Read More ...

Sitting in the producer chair will be Peter Tagtgren, who's worked with Immortal, Celtic Frost, Hypocrisy and Dimmu Borgir.

"I'm stoked to work together with a dude that needs no instruction," says frontman Helmuth. "I'm sure that Peter will create a massive soundwall for our ninth longplayer. We are absolutely focused on the new album. That's the only reason why we play only a few open-airs this summer. The masterplan is to record again in 4-5 sessions 'til middle of September. Once again letting the tracks slowly take form, with the songwriting and production reaching a new level of intensity."

"I am really looking forward to producing and mixing the new Belphegor album," says producer Peter Tagtgren. "It's going to be a blast ... you better be prepared."

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from new roles for Miranda "iCarly" Cosgrove and Jordin Sparks, to new goals for Bret Michaels, to the new, untamable, video by Miley Cyrus, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

miranda%20cosgrove* It looks like Disney may have some competition in the teen actress/singer market as Nickelodeon's Miranda Cosgrove, who most people know as iCarly, landed at number eight on the Billboard Albums chart this past week with her full length debut, Sparks Fly. Hey, does anybody else remember when singers would get big and then try to be on TV, and actors having albums was an oddity? When did that get totally reversed? I think once all of this devolves into Snookie Sings The American Standards we'll see the ship start to right itself again.

drakeDrake debuted his second single off 'Thank Me Later' late last month and came through fairly quickly with the video. The Kanye West-produced "Find Your Love" sounds like a return to his "Successful" roots combined with hints of Kanye's '808s and Heartbreak' days. The video is pretty dark, taking place in the yards of Jamaica. Mavado plays the lead mobster in a gang where his official girl [video vixen and rumored girlfriend of Drake, Maliah Michel] becomes Drake's love interest. After a warning from the elder statesmen, Drake insists on spending one more night with his onscreen/offscreen dime. What he finds is a head full of lead…so we think. The video ends with Drake handcuffed to a chair as Mavado hands his woman the pistol. She walks behind Drake with the gun to his head and the screen turns black. Shots fired. Did she shoot Drake or Mavado? We don't know.

Maybe we'll find out in "July," the title of Drake's leaked track from yesterday. This song features Drake rapping (he's a songbird in "Find Your Love") still in tune with romantic sentiments. The track is reminiscent of late-90's H Read More ...

"It's a really, really difficult time for a lot of people," Halford told CNN recently. "We [Judas Priest] try and stay out of politics – that's not our job – but I think for something as volatile as this...there's Latino metalheads and there's all kinds of metalheads. From my heart, I think it's a racist law, I really do. I mean, I've thought about it and I've looked at everybody's point of view, and it's a terrible thing that's going on there, so I'm a little upset about the whole thing. I hope it gets resolved."

He adds, "All I want to do is rock and roll. I think that's what rock and roll's main job is. There's enough trouble going on in the world and we give people a moment to forget about all that and just kind of escape it and so forth. But I think it's valuable to get a person's poin Read More ...

Florida is home to more than insects, transients, and orange groves - this is ground zero for the death metal scene.  According to the Tampa-based group Order of Ennead's guitarist John Li, "It must be something in the water." Well, whatever they're all drinking in the sunshine state, it's definitely working to make some progressive moves within the genre. Order of Ennead, the creation of former Council of the Fallen vocalist Kevin Quirion, pursues the best parts of death and black metal, throws in a subtle dose of thrash, and urges their moshing fans to look inside themselves for the answers to life's many questions.

When Quirion's Council of the Fallen ended, he took some unused material and a new outlook on the sound and vocal style to create Order of Ennead as a more progressive death or black metal band. Also joining Quirion's new formation was Deicide drummer Steve Asheim and Council of the Fallen bassist Scott Patrick. The name, Order of Ennead, refers to a mythical group of nine that created the universe and bestowed knowledge upon man.  The collective adopted the name not so much to bestow knowl Read More ...
twitterI will take an educated guess that the revolution will not be televised. Why televise it when in 140 characters or less, you can tweet away? Well, more rappers are tweeting away; "leaking" their music and pleading for Retweets. Some of them have gotten rid of their career long publicists and dignity along with it.

When has cutting corners ever paid off? I ask this question just to bring up the fact that they're cutting corners. This is social media that you're playing with ... this is big business here. anthraxIt's official. Joey Belladonna will return to Anthrax as their frontman. We reported last week that it was nothing more than a rumor, and that there was a possibility that the frontman duties could have gone to either Joey Belladonna or John Bush, due to cryptic internet posts on foreign websites, although we were leaning toward Belladonna as he was seen with guys from the band recently in a club in New York. But now the cat's out of the bag.

"Im super excited about this," said guitarist Scott Ian. "Joey and the rest of the band came to see me play at a club in New York, I hadn't seen Joey for years, since the end of the reunion tour. Joey taps me on the shoulder, instant big hug, it felt like no time had gone by. The band dynamic is an interesting one - in Anthrax, Joey and I spent so many years of our lives together, we grew up together, we know each other so well, so it was like no time was lost."

Belladonna was of course Anthrax's original frontman from 1985-1992 and was on all their seminal albums and reunited with the band for a 2005-2007 reunion tour. According to Be Read More ...

kenny%20chesneyNormally in this space I write about country music.  Today I'm going to write about the community that is in complete and utter shock after a massive two days long ‘monsoon' hit Middle Tennessee and delivered one hell of a right-hook to Nashville.  16-17 inches of rain fell in the downtown Nashville area while over 20 inches hit some other places and while we were all reeling from massive floods that filled up the Cumberland and Harpeth Rivers, most of America was clueless to our plight.

This is nothing new to Nashville as it's always been this big city with the heart of a small town and like small towns, the citizens in the community band together when the goin' gets tough.  It's that spirit which has made Nashville Music City and it's that same spirit that has driven artists to donate time and money to charities around the country.   Even with this ‘we can do it ourselves' spirit, Nashville still is broken.

Thomas%20GurrathGerman trainee teacher Thomas Gurrath is being hailed as one of the metal teachers on earth. By day, he's training to be a teacher of politics, history and ethics at Hegel Gymnasium in the Germany's Vaihingen district. By night, he's "The Bloodbeast," the frontman of gory death metal band Debauchery. They are said to feature, "naked, blood-smeared women" in its live act. The band's album covers include these naked, blood smeared women as well as chainsaws and other S&M equipment.

But of course, this dual life is causing some friction amongst the upper brass of the school. After a school supervisor found some of the material on the band's website, he was reported to the school authorities. Now, he's been given an ultimatum, on the grounds that non-violence was crucial to upholding the image of the teaching profession. And that by maintaining his position in the gory death metal band, he could not simply uphold that professional image.

He must give up the band by January 1st if he is to continue his teaching traineeship.

I try my best never to take anything for granted. Like right now. As I am laying on my couch watching Artie Lange's Beer League, trying to battle the nausea that comes with taking a painkiller, due to a massive sinus infection that causes me to feel like my teeth are going to fall out, I am remembering how I felt yesterday, when my sinuses weren't hating me and I didn't want to punch them in the face. When I felt totally normal. I don't get how people take painkillers recreationally because they do a number on my tummy.  I spent the entire day at Citizen's Bank Park with two friends and it was the best day ever. It felt like summer. It tasted like summer. It smelled like summer. And their company, their presence and their conversation elevated my mood. But a day in the 90+ degree sun did a number on me and I'm drained right now, nauseous and sore. I wish I felt like I felt earlier today and yesterday, with no exhaustion or sinus pressure that makes me want to punch my mouth in the face. Wink wink.

This simple discomfort, which I know shall pass within the next day or so, reminded me of how lucky I am to have a cool job that I always dreamed of having! How fucking rad is it to work with music, to expose bands to people and people to bands? I don't ever take that f Read More ...

anthraxWith all the conversations and upcoming shows regarding a 'Big Four Tour' with Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, it would seem to make sense if one of the bands actually had a singer lined up and ready for Glory. The band I'm referring to is, of course, Anthrax. But it appears this has been remedied, at least in the rumor mill, as the web has been swept with gossip that Joey Belladonna, Anthrax's original frontman, will be singing with the band once again.

Belladonna was seen with drummer Charlie Benante and bassist Frank Bello at a Fozzy show recently at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York, which is the source of the speculation circulating about his return.

And on a Swedish version of the Sonisphere website, it is written (In Swedish): "Who is singing? Let's say this: His initials are J.B. And he has one goal: a mosh, for everyone." This of course, doesn't clarify anything really, as the two most famous singers in Anthrax both have those initials: Joey Belladonna and John Bush. Although the reference to "moshing" could lean in favor of Belladonna as he was the singer for Read More ...

With all the trends that ebb and flow through the music business, and even when commercially viable, safe and cuddly artists rule the radio, there has been a hard driving force to be reckoned with all along over the last several decades.  Somehow it doesn't die.  Thirty years of thrash, and one of the bands that kept the speed metal mania alive and well has been Exodus.

In their long existence, this band has endured numerous changes in lineup, lengthy hiatuses, and the unfortunate loss of two members. As one of the original founding members, drummer Tom Hunting has years of experience and insight into the world of metal music and what the lifeblood of Exodus truly is.

We caught up with Tom as the band was winding down a month-long tour in support of Megadeth and Testament.  He offers a few thoughts on touring, what it takes to make it in this game, and just how intense the new Exodus album promises to be.  In his own words, Tom Hunting says of the new songs – "I think these songs are going to stomp some ass played live. I don't think I could possibly go any faster."

brandyA few years back America's R&B sweetheart turned Moesha cult leader, Brandy Norwood, discussed with AllHipHop.com that she could rap. While it seemed more like a dirty little secret than a career she would embark upon, Brandy admitted to recording several rap tracks that she never planned on showing the light of day. Several months later, a viral home video of Brandy rapping came out, and the alter ego "Bran' Nu" was bestowed upon Miss Norwood. Late last year, Bran' Nu hopped on the Timbaland track "Meet In Tha Middle," and just a few months ago Brandy showed up at a Timbaland live performance to spit some bars for everyone.

While in the early stages of her rap career, Brandy denied there even being such. Will we see Bran' Nu come to the forefront? The answer is maybe.

Every week, 101D.com will highlight up-and-coming talent in our exclusive Diamonds In The Rough series. This week, we proudly present Ito. The Kingston, Jamaica-bred artist fuses elements of reggae, jazz and gospel to form a patent 'Rejago' hybrid. That dynamic alone makes this diamond one of a kind.

Background Check: Ito wanted to be a musician ever since he was a little kid, despite having very little. As a young boy living in Kingston, Jamaica, he couldn't afford to buy instruments, so he made a guitar out of plywood, played drums on tin cans and sang on street corners to anyone who would listen. Later in life he relocated to America, lived in various states including California, Connecticut and New Jersey, and dropped three full-length recordings – all of which contain his original style. "I describe my work as 'Rejago' because it is a combination of reggae, jazz, and gospel, plus a touch of classic," the Kingston artist explains. Just like his style, Ito is looking to make classic music.
