street%20dogsPunk rock proponents for social justice, Street Dogs, have announced plans to return to the studio in February to record their fifth studio album and follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2008 Hellcat debut State of Grace.  The band will be recording with bassist Johnny Rioux as producer and Rick Barton (original Dropkick Murphys guitarist) co-producing at the infamous punk rock studio the Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado which was built by members of Descendents, All and Black Flag.

Punk rock runs deep in the veins of Street Dogs, with former Dropkick Murphys singer Mike McColgan's uncompromising lyrics alongside bassist Johnny Rioux, guitarists Marcus Hollar and Tobe Bean III and drummer Paul Rucker's fist pumping street punk anthems.  The band burst onto the scene in 2002 and has released a string of classic albums including 2008's State of Grace, which critics called "a raucous and purposeful working man's ride" (Dallas Morning News) with "the kind of political streak rarely heard since the Clash" (Cleveland Scene).

alkaline%20trioCelebrated punk rock cult heroes, Alkaline Trio have announced the release of their forthcoming album, This Addiction, on February 23 via Epitaph Records/Heart & Skull.

Recorded and produced by the band with help from longtime cohort Matt Allison at Atlas Studios in Chicago, This Addiction marks Alkaline Trio's first release on their imprint label Heart & Skull and first with their parent label Epitaph Records.  The album also finds the Trio revisiting their punk roots while moving forward creatively.

"This record is a rock record but our punk rock upbringing definitely shines through, more so than our last few records," singer/guitarist Matt Skiba recently told Spinner.com. "The vibe is similar to our humble beginnings. It's a step forward but I also think it has glimmers of our past in it."

Beginning January 5, fans can visit www.ThisAddiction.org where they will have the opportunity to stream the title track and first single "This Addiction," in exchange for a Twitter or Facebook posting.  A metaphoric crowd pleaser, "This Addiction" is "abou Read More ...
Top 20 Albums Of The Decade - December 31st , 2009
With the new year looming, music critics have been scrambling to comprise various top ten lists to commemorate the decade. But your BFF, however, has one-upped my fellow literary snobs by creating a top twenty albums of the decade list that will be unparallel and drastically different than anyone else could dream up. Touching on all the musical spectrums, whether it be hip-hop, rock or pop, we got it all. So kick back with your Starbucks frappuccino and enjoy an overdose of rhetoric as I count down my top twenty albums of the decade!

blessed%20by%20a%20broken%20heart20) Blessed By A Broken Heart: Blessed By A Broken Heart

They might have been around a few years earlier, but in 2008, Blessed By A Broken Heart unearthed a gem - that being their self-titled album. It's a metalcore circus, but not constructed in the manner of Avenged Sevenfold or The Devil Wears Prada. Instead, the crew laced their music with a hint of glam, 80's rock and enough melody to keep Obama two-steppin' all the way to Hawaii for the holidays (or at least the airport). It's Read More ...
new%20found%20glory"I never imagined we would get to the point of releasing a 10 Year Anniversary edition…When we were recording this record, we were still all pretty much living at home with our parents," vocalist Jordan Pundik explains. "We were just five kids from the suburbs that knew some power chords, had a love for playing music, and a love for playing live shows."

For pop-punk, New Found Glory's self-titled album from 2000 helped define the genre, inspire the formation of bands everywhere, and pave the way for the success of groups such as Fall Out Boy.  Now, a decade later, the CD+DVD New Found Glory (10th Anniversary Edition) (Geffen/UMe), released January 26, 2010, brings together that original album, seven previously unreleased or rare bonus tracks, and the 2002 DVD documentary The Story So Far, which featured all of the band's music videos to that date plus concert footage, interviews, and more.  The package also includes revealing new liner notes from each band member and the album's producer Neal Avron (Fall Out Boy, Everclear, Good Charlotte, Yellowcard).

Green Day Re-Polishes '21 Guns' - November 20th , 2009
Green%20DayMulti-platinum rock band Green Day are in the studio this week recording a new version of their hit single "21 Guns" with the cast of American Idiot — the critically-acclaimed stage version of the band's 2004 album that has been playing at Berkeley Rep since early September. The band's singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong is producing the track, which will impact radio at the end of November and be made available for purchase through all digital retailers.

Green Day, which also includes bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool, are shooting a video for "21 Guns" with the American Idiot cast.  American Idiot premiered at Berkeley Rep on September 4th and was extended through to November 15th due to record-breaking sales and unprecedented demand for seats. Called "the hottest fall theatre ticket," by the San Jose Mercury News, American Idiot brought Green Day's blockbuster album to life in a show staged by Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), who collaborated with Armstrong on the story.

New Tomorrow - November 19th , 2009

New Tomorrow is ready to wake up the youth from commercial hypnosis. The San Luis Obispo, California-based quartet has earned quite a bit of recognition lately from rock heavyweights such as My Chemical Romance because their music packs a hardcore punch, much like one thrown by hometown mixed martial artist Chuck Liddell.

Then again, the recognition has been a long time coming. For the past several years, New Tomorrow have focused all their efforts entirely on building a rabid fan base, defining their sound and dropping gems like 2006's HellHiHelloHi and 2007's It's All Over But The Shouting

Now, the quartet (comprised of vocalist Brandon Wood, guitarist Adam Kratochvil, bassist Danny Derrick and drummer Kevin Menesez) is living up to their band name on their third offering We're Counting On The Youth. Throughout the collection, the crew speaks to a new generation of music heads through hardcore resonance and politically-driven themes. It's as if the group is reaching out to the scene kids in a plea for help and requesting for a positive change to take place.

MySpace%20Music%2C%20MySpace%20label%2C%20MySpaceMySpace Music is “almost certainly” going to severely restrict free streaming to users, say multiple sources, and move to a paid model.

“They are spending $20 million/month on streaming royalties, and that just isn’t sustainable,” said one source with knowledge of MySpace’s relationships with the labels. Other sources have said that MySpace’s royalty payments are much lower, but don’t deny that the service is a cash hole.

It was commonly assumed that MySpace was an exception because of the fact that it was co-owned with major label groups. Within the past couple of years, MySpace has already suffered falling visitor counts to social network giant Facebook.

MySpace has yet to comment on this story, but reports by MySpace parent NewsCorp Chairman Richard Murdoch has included statements that a free website is unsustainable.

mxpxAfter a wildly successful 17th anniversary summer, complete with a fan "favorites" live broadcast performance, the punk-pop gurus of Bremerton, WA are back at it again. Now, MxPx are set to release Left Coast Punk, their latest EP (the band's first in five years), through their very own label, Rock City Recording Company.

MxPx has always been the harder-and-faster variety of punk playing bands, the band coined the phrase "Left Coast Punk" as a simple way to describe their sound, and those similar, residing from the Left Coast.  It is that particular sound that is evident within the new tracks and MxPx vocalist and bassist, Mike Herrera felt the name just seemed to fit, "It just made sense to use the term, it's been around awhile, something I believe we coined, but it perfectly describes the clash of pop sensibility with the fast and hard playing that we are known for."

That clash of sounds is what hardcore MxPx fans will get; however the band did add in a melodic soft touch on a couple of tracks including the first single, "End," a tribute to some great punk and rock shows of the past.   Read More ...

Ben Weasel - October 13th , 2009

Ben Weasel is best known as the frontman and guitarist of veteran Chicago punk band Screeching Weasel, which has been active on and off since 1986. He's also the guitarist and frontman of The Riverdales, another Chicago punk that entered the scene in the mid 90s.

The Riverdales recently released their fourth studio album, Invasion USA, their first in six years, featuring songs based on old science fiction movies. On top of this, Weasel became a brand new father of twin girls and is currently reforming Screeching Weasel with original member Dan Vapid.

We spoke with him about being a new father, his plans with The Rivedrdales and Screeching Weasel and the state of punk rock music.

101D.com: You are a busy man...

Ben Weasel: Yeah, lately. I have a tendency to take on more than I ought to, which I've gotten a little bit better at, but with the kids arriving, that's more than a handful right there.

Alyssa Jacey / Damn Handsome - October 5th , 2009

Every week, 101D.com will highlight two new artists in our exclusive Diamonds In The Rough Series. This week, we proudly present Alyssa Jacey and Damn Handsome And The Birthday Suits, two talented groups from Cali that are looking to bring the pain and good vibes to the music industry!

Damn Handsome And The Birthday Suits

Background Check: A politically outspoken trio from Northern California, Damn Handsome And The Birthday Suits are often told they resemble mega-punk group Green Day, who originate from the same area. "It's an honor," said vocalist Rob Barrett. "We're not afraid to say what we think." Drummer Jonathan Rodgers met Rob two years ago after his casual in-store playing at Guitar Center caught Rob's attention. "It was a weird ironic thing because I grew up in a rock background," Rob said. "I'd heard of Led Zeppelin but couldn't name a single song, whereas Johnathan staked his life on rhythm and blues." starfucking%20hipsters"Never Rest In Peace" is the stellar second album and Alternative Tentacles debut by the smoking-hot punk supergroup featuring Sturg "Stza" Crack (Leftover Crack, Choking Victim), Frank Piegaro (The Degenerics), and Nico de Gallo (Casa de Chihuahua), as well as members of Hold Steady, Ensign, Big Attack!, Awkward Thought, and Aloke.

STAR FUCKING HIPSTERS returns this time for a much fiercer round of sonic glory, combining insanely catchy melodic punk and metal, with the token ska tune. The band has clearly grown since their first album, 2008's Fat Wreck Chords release "Until We're Dead." A year's worth of star fucking live shows, writing, and off-the-map creativity from central STAR FUCKING HIPSTER, Sturg, pays off with rock-solid songwriting and a sharper edge. Songs with an aggressive political slant take on topics like Native American issues ("Banned From the Land"), and a woman's right to choose ("Church & Rape"). "Never Rest In Peace" is Sturg's most heartfelt and emotional album to date.

Cloak/Dagger Have Some Lost Art - September 2nd , 2009
cloak%20daggerIs it punk? Hardcore? Garage? Make up your own mind about Cloak/Dagger's latest full-length, Lost Art.

Colin Barth's winding guitars juggle melody, punch and vitriol is on par with the Avengers, John Reis, Mission of Burma and Greg Ginn. Play it loud on tracks such as "Deathbed Rebels" that push the punk envelope a bit further with frenzied, circle-pit fodder reminiscent of the Circle Jerks and Big Boys.

Underneath, snaking rolls of bass drive the proceedings with the flawless percussive thrust of The Ramones, Hot Snakes and bygone Boston hardcore heroes F.U.s and Jerry's Kids. Over this Jason Mazzola distinguishes the band with a full, arching tenor that's more bellow than scream. Mazzola's delivery and lyrics shine especially on numbers like "Lower Eastada" and "Dead Idols," where the band's punk ‘n roll swagger takes over. After listening to Lost Art, you won't be worried about categorizing the band, only when they go back on tour.

new%20collisionsIn just over six months, Boston's The New Collisions have gone from an unknown club band to one of the northeast's hottest acts. Fresh off a national tour with The B-52s and Blondie, they are gearing up for the release of their debut EP, "Invisible Embraces," on November 17.

Greg Hawkes, the legendary keyboard player from The Cars, happened to catch one of the band's first shows. Over the spring, he worked with the band and with platinum-selling producer Anthony Resta (Duran Duran, Missing Persons), another early fan.

"We want The New Collisions to be about everything we love," says Sarah Guild, 23, the band's platinum-haired frontwoman. "Fashion, art, melody, great lyrics--all the things that make pop music timeless. But to see it come together this quickly has been simply incredible."

The result speaks for itself. Influences from the New Wave explosion of '77-'83, plus the early 60s of Phil Spector and Brian Wilson, meet a modern, dancey, intense sound. There are powerful female vocals,  jagged analog synth, sweeping harmonies, catchy dance rhythms, and a mes Read More ...

Down For The Count - August 21st , 2009

Their lyrics might be too mature for some scene kids to handle and their sound is a little heavier than the flavor spewed by most pop-punk bands, but Down For The Count doesn't care. This piercing collective has their own identity - one that has won the hearts of many fans who can handle their sincere style.

Last night for instance, the band headlined a packed show at in Nashville, Tennessee at The Anchor – a venue that is attached to a church. Although they aren't the pop-punk version of Creed or a Christian band by any means, Down For The Count doesn't mind rocking out in God's House. In fact, they kinda prefer it to a regular concert hall.

"A lot of the time, church shows make for really good shows because the youth group kids are really supportive and kids usually buy merch," front man Nate Sirotta explains. "The kids are usually more receptive and it's a cooler vibe sometimes because when you play just normal clubs or venues, those typical scenester kids are kinda tough to win over. But if you play in churches, the kids are just happy to have bands, so they're just happy and receptive. Churches have defi Read More ...

Lights On In October - August 17th , 2009
LightsWarner Bros Records is proud to announce the October 6, 2009 release of The Listening, the debut full-length album from LIGHTS. The Toronto singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist crafts her own brand of sparkling, otherworldly electro-pop that is, in her words "soft, but not pussy-soft, you know?"  LIGHTS' songs have already garnered almost 16 million plays on MySpace, and she has racked up a #1 hit on MuchMusic, inclusion in a series of Old Navy commercials, and airtime on The Hills. On the strength of her self-titled EP alone, LIGHTS won the 2009 Juno (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy Award) for New Artist of the Year, joining the ranks of Feist and Nelly Furtado.

During her stint on this summer's Van's Warped Tour Rolling Stone selected LIGHTS as one of four Warped Tour Buzz Bands, calling her a "retro new wave...keytar-rocking pixie."

Safari So Good - August 14th , 2009

Safari So Good has so much fun that they almost forget to plug their EP debut Every Fight Is A Food Fight When You're A Cannibal. As a matter of fact, they originally sidestepped this interview, but to be fair that was only because their guitarist broke his clavicle bone in a skateboarding accident. It was a good excuse to say the least.

While the band has been busy schooling a temporary guitarist on their set list, fulltime guitarist Tony Bavaria and drummer Dan Heatherly snuck away to holler at 101D.com. And what's one of the first things they talk about? Acting like high school cheerleaders to raise awareness about their cause. In their case, it's spreading the Safari So Good name and the mental picture is just not good.

"I think the Bikini car washes we've been doing have been a great success," Heatherly says. Bavaria adds, "I just hate all the waxing we have to do to look good in those bikinis."

Of course they're only joking, we think, but that's how these guys roll.

"At this point, the best way to describe the new album is My Chemical Romance being the purest, most distilled version of itself," Way says. "No bells and whistles, as the focus has been on melody and songwriting. If it doesn't work in a room with just the five of us, we aren't trying to make it work in the studio with effects and string sections. Making The Black Parade allowed us the departur Read More ...
Green Day Does Footwear - July 31st , 2009
Green%20DayWalking a thin line between style and edge, Macbeth Footwear is proud to announce the birth of its newest "Studio Project" collaboration, the "45 RPM." Designed to the likings and style of none other than Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt, this innovative shoe brings a unique new look that is ready to hit the ground running.  Even more impressive, Mike is donating all royalties from sales to shoe charity Soles4Souls, the international shoe charity dedicated to providing free shoes to people in need.

Scream Hello - July 29th , 2009
scream hello
New Jersey has become sort of a breeding ground for talented rock bands over the past few years as groups such as Armor For Sleep, Senses Fail and My Chemical Romance have plummeted to the mainstream forefront of their respective genres. The next group from the Garden State who could make an impact on a national scale could very well be Scream Hello. After all, the pop-friendly quartet has the passion, talent, work ethic and even insomnia to achieve success without the aid of any sleeping pills – well, for the most part, that is.

The four-piece (comprised of James, Dan, Chris, and Adam) broke ground in the college town of New Brunswick back in 2002, and while music sometimes took a backseat to frat parties, Scream Hello was able to thrive within the underground. By 2006, they released their full-length debut Infinite Son and hit the road running ... or touring, rather.

Although the boys had fun and caused their fair share of mischief, the melodic entourage returns with their sophomore set Everything Is Always Still Happening. The ten-track collection is more melodic and polished than their previous Read More ...

It was 9:42 in the morning and "Freak On A Leash" by Korn is ringing on my phone. I turn over, grab my cell phone and stare at the text message. It said "Bethany with Warped Tour Press. I am back in a trailer behind the amphitheater. After you check in at a guest list tent at doors, come see me. Thanks!" I know what you're thinking and no, I wasn't propositioned for sex. This is innocent.

But whatever. My girlfriend should be waking me up in eighteen minutes once she is out of the shower, so let me sleep. By the time 10:08 rolls around I decide to crawl ten feet to a door, open it up and star at my girlfriend just beginning to awake from her deep slumber. "Lizzie," I said in a soft yet volatile voice. "You were supposed to already be in the shower so we could roll to the Warped on time."

She stretched and happily said, "I'm gonna do that now, Bearie Fraze! I don't take long. I'll be really quick!" I'm here thinking ‘Whatever. You're a woman and women take forever in the bathroom.'

So every year I hit up the Warped Tour stop in Charlotte, North Carolina and I am never there on time. This year won't be any different. Doors open at 11 AM and I won't be there until 12:45. We need to print off directions, get Chik-Fil-A, park and then wait for my buddy Parnell Read More ...

BlinkPop-punkers Blink 182 began their tour in Las Vegas last night to a sold out crowd of 4,000 adoring fans. The band played a 22 song set that included work mostly from their most recent three albums.

Swearing like sailors and referencing 'your mom' more than any human every should, the band gave no implication that they have lost their touch. After drummer Travis Barker has starred on a reality show that ended in divorce and nearly ended his life in a plane crash, he still manages to amaze the crowd. The most talked about aspect of the show was his rotating drumkit. Able to levitate while playing a solo, his antics were clearly the highlight of the performance.

The band will be touring throughout the US during the remaining month of Summer and all of Fall. With openers like Weezer, Fall Out Boy and the All American Rejects-those shows are bound to sell out too.

RollingStone gives more details:
"Playing the Joint at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas last night, the band played 22 vintage Blink-182 songs in an hour and a half, seasoning the set with plenty of wisecracks. Hoppus congratulated the crowd at Read More ...
Saint Alvia Cartel - July 22nd , 2009
saint alvia cartel
Ben Rispin might never strut his stuff for fashion judges on Project Runaway, but this husky vocalist has a very distinct presence. Last summer, the Canadian and the rest of his cohorts from the Saint Alvia Cartel (also comprised of vocalist/guitarist Rob Pasalic, bassist Greg Fisher, guitarist Greg Taylor, organist Brandon Bliss and drummer Matt Richmond) were performing at the Warped Tour, and when he got off the stage, the happy-go-lucky scruffy-bearded singer was making new friends with teenage admirers.

Appearance aside, his voice demands attention. It's aggressive during the sextet's self-titled debut, but even more intense when he cuts radio spots like he did for the Strombo Radio show. "Monster Truck mayhem commercials may be my next career," he says with a chuckle.

By the way it looks, however, Rispin won't be out of a job anytime soon. In 2005, Rispin just got finished with his previous group Video Dead and was looking for something different to do. He hooked up with Taylor and Pasalic to launch the Saint Alvia Cartel and they began writing material in Taylor's b Read More ...

Blink%20182The pop punk trio will officially start the next chapter of their music careers this Thursday, July 23rd when they kick off their tour. Singer/bassist Mark Hoppus recently gushed to Rolling Stone that they have worked with Martin Phillips, the guy responsible for designing sets for Kanye West and Nine Inch Nails.

This certainly adds a special touch to such a momentous tour, something all the band members are looking forward to. "We can't wait," Hoppus says. "It's a strange feeling to have, after not touring with Blink for the past five years, to think that in just a few days, we'll be hitting the road and playing all of these sold-out shows. And Martin's production is just ridiculous. All of our techs have been down there to see the stage set up, and they're e-mailing me, going, 'Oh my God, there are so many speakers, just so many lights.' I haven't seen it myself, but the pictures I've seen look ridiculous. Everything kind of moves and joins and separates to make these huge video screens, so its pretty complicated."

The Guts - July 13th , 2009
the guts
For the past several years, New England's wicked hardcore scene has been an epicenter for metal heads everywhere and rightly so. The shredding riffs and cookie monster screams of agony are just that gangster. But as a result, their punk rock scene has been pushed to the side and now, it's time for New England punk rockers like The Guts to cash in on some of that street credibility.

Going the route of likeminded bands The Queers and The Leftovers, the New Hampshire based quartet (comprised of guitarist Geoff Useless, guitarist, bassist Nate Doyle and drummer Rick Orcutt) lay it all on the line on their full-length debut Let It Go, a colorful collection that combines melody, aggression and urgency.

The Guts have an old school base that sounds reminiscent of Green Day circa de 1994 during their "Basketcase" days, and straightforward lyricism that is easy to comprehend. But unlike other pop-punk bands, they don't whine about missed opportunities and "what could have been." Nah, The Guts are tired of wasting their time on dumb bitches and occasionally, they get a nice little harmony going revolving around Read More ...

Happy Sweet 17, MxPx - July 7th , 2009
mxpxCan you believe that MxPx have been around for 17 years? It blows my mind. It seems like just yesterday since the group played their earliest shows. Then again, it's been a while since I've been in middle school.

The all stars are slated to do a live performance broadcasted nationwide through Stickam.com and a set list chosen by the fans through PickRset.com. Big news for the social networking company who's looking to drive in more traffic. Read below for a quick history lesson on the band and more about the performance.

Today marks the 17 year anniversary to the day that the rock juggernaut that is MxPx performed their very first show in the backyard of Mike Herrera's childhood home in Bremerton, WA. In that very suburban spot, they created a recording studio out of the free-standing garage, and The Clubhouse was born.  It has become a memorable and historic location for the band, which is why they have chosen, on this anniversary, to bring it back home, literally, and perform a "best of" set list live for their fans!

Real Deal - July 3rd , 2009
Real Deal
Punk rock has always been a musical style that was fueled by high energy and built on a foundation of self-empowerment. While the essence of punk may have become convoluted over the years by way of corporate sponsorships and fashion show images, there are still a few bands that embody the spirit of punk's early days.

Montreal-based The Real Deal channels that classic spirit faster than a Ghost Buster can zap The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Since their formation in 2003, the band has embraced the DIY work ethic that their punk-rock forefathers laid forth and have been touring relentlessly with the likes of Bigwig, Set Your Goals and Ill Scarlet. They even landed dates on the Warped Tour.

After a series of independent releases, the band has hooked up with Stomp Records (owned by Ska giants The Planet Smashers) for their new album Hungover, But Dead Sober. The album takes listeners back to the early '90s era of punk, when bands like Rancid and NOFX were in their prime, and tosses in a healthy dose of Ska that layers everything to create infectious ear candy.

Big D And The Kids Table - June 29th , 2009

While the music industry continues to wallow in their self-pity, Boston-based Big D and The Kids Table has quietly continued to create infectious punk-rock and constantly find ways to progress as songwriters. Their blue-collar work ethic, 'average joe' sensibility and light-hearted nature allow them to connect with types of music fans, regardless of genre.

Big D's fast paced brand of punk-rock was established in the early '90s when members of the group hooked up at college in Boston. After assembling and writing a series of energetic 3-chord bangers, the group (comprised of vocalist David McWane, guitarist Sean Rogan, bassist Steve Foote, drummer Jon Reilly, trombonist  Paul Cuttler, trumpeter Dan Stoppelman and saxophonist Ryan O'Connor) quickly started playing every club, basement or VFW Hall in the New England area. Once they had conquered their home turf, Big D and The Kids Table took their music to a national level and adopted a pile-in-the-van mentality that saw them embark on countless DIY tours alongside the likes of Anti-Flag, Mustard Plug, Reel Big Fish, The Planet Smashers and a veritable who’s Read More ...

The Copyrights - June 22nd , 2009

Though pop punk is the latest craze among radio stations and the Warped Tour generation, The Copyrights have taken a slightly different approach to the trendy subgenre. While the Carbondale, Illinois-based quartet has an array of vibrant pop-friendly records on their fourth full-length album Learn The Hard Way, their music is fast-paced and the blunt lyricism is entertaining, yet reflective of every day adventures the stereotypical art major goes through. It's a throwback to the early 90's era of punk with a modern twist and it's that honest, sincere, don't-beat-it-around-the-bush attitude that has made The Copyrights stand out.

Formed in 2002, The Copyrights (comprised of lead vocalist/bassist Adam Fletcher, drummer Jake Pfaff, and guitarists Luke McNeill and Brett Hunter) carved out a niche in their hometown of Carbondale and surrounding areas. Though a new band, the group had a strong presence in 2003 when they unveiled their studio debut album We Didn't Come Here To Die. Three years later, they released Mutiny Pop, which was a youthful collection of short and sweet compositions.

Concerts You Could Never Go To - June 22nd , 2009

Shot Baker - June 19th , 2009
Shot Baker

Located in the unassuming Chicago suburb of Park Ridge is a high school named Main South. Though it may seem far fetched, Main South, amid its typical suburban surroundings, was once a hotbed for punk rock. It's where the four members of Shot Baker (lead vocalist Tony Kovacs, drummer Chris Gach, guitarist John Krohn and bassist Nat Wright) all first met.

According to Kovacs when the band formed in 2002, he was the only one who knew everyone. "I pulled people from different groups and said, 'Hey, you, you and you. You guys all wanna get into a band?'" The band gelled quickly as they developed their classic punk rock sound.

This summer they released their latest album, Take Control, and recently 101D.com caught up with Kovacs to find out more about the band, their hometown's punk rock scene, and how a documentary about atomic bombs became a major influence on the group.

sniderIt's a mad slow news day today. But then again, it's Friday and it's summer time, so it should be expected.

Anyways, I was surfing through NoiseCreep.com and it's always cool to hear what veteran artists are listening to nowadays, what they deem is cool. It's kinda like, "Oh, we like the same band. Me and this celebrity should be best friends." Or something like that.

Well evidently, rock music pioneer Dee Snider is very much attached to another group who seems to be flirting with makeup.

From NoiseCreep.com:

"The last few years I've fallen in love with My Chemical Romance. People think metal lyrics are so down and depressing but they should check out MCR. Their stuff is dark and if you listen to 'The Black Parade,' that entire record is about death."

Yeah. Take "Helena" for instance. Remember that video? The band performed at a funeral and then, the chick came to life and did some funky weird dance with an umbrella? Dope video, depressing, but good shizzle nonetheless.

Austin Lucas - June 16th , 2009

Finding something new and unique in a musical genre as rife with longstanding tradition as country can be a challenge. Far too often we see artists fall into the traps of cliché and formulaic song crafting. Austin Lucas, however, has managed to negotiate his way around these traps and pitfalls to create a brand of country music all his own.  One of the major reasons why he’s been able to do this is his extensive background in, believe it or not, everything but country.

With roots that include both a significant amount of time as a member of the Indiana University Children's Choir, where he performed in three operas and dozens of classical choral pieces, and his extensive background in punk/hardcore bands, which he started performing in when he was twelve, Lucas has a lineage that’s very unique to the country music scene.

Currently residing in Praha, Czech Republic, Lucas released his North American debut, Putting The Hammer Down, in 2008.  The eight-song EP features a diverse array of topics and styles.  From the fast paced "There's Always Someone Tougher and Meaner," to the intense storytelling of "Bruise Read More ...

American Diary - May 28th , 2009
american diary
American Diary is on the verge of beginning a new chapter in their illustrious young careers. While the Baltimore based quartet (comprised of vocalist/guitarist Ben DeHan, lead guitarist Mikey Clark, bassist Brandon Ingley and drummer Brandon Reeder) writes compelling pop punk manifestos, their resonance is much richer than that of an average band in the genre, as displayed on their latest offering The Brightest Colors. Although the eight-track collection is heavily packed with polished melodies and colorful overtones, their deep sound is amplified and their courageous lyricism, detailing both teenage romanticism and self-confessed mess-ups, allows them to stick out in a seemingly saturated market.

Despite their tasteful mixture, the collective wasn't initially prepared slide into the mainstream upon their inception in 2004. Since two of the members were attending college, American Diary was limited to spreading their gospel in the Mid-Atlantic.

Though they were restricted to promoting in a certain area, the Baltimore quartet capitalized on their situation. Read More ...
Teenage Bottlerocket - May 28th , 2009
teenage bottlerocket

Four dudes driving around the country in a van that keeps breaking down doesn't particularly sound like a jolly good time, but the guys from Teenage Bottlerocket are relishing in the experience. As a matter of fact, the Wyoming-based quintet (comprised of vocalist Kody Templeman, bassist Miguel Chen, guitarist Ray Carlisle and drummer Brandon Carlisle) are using up all their vacation time from their day jobs just to hit the road and promote their third studio album Warning Device. The punk-heavy record carries pop charisma, which adds depth to many of the songs. Perhaps Brandon Carlisle describes it best when he says, "The whole album is killer."

Then again, the twin Carlisle brothers are finally playing the punk rock resonance they always envisioned. In 2001, they launched Teenage Bottlerocket and decided to follow in the songwriting path laid down by the Ramones. Over the next couple of years, the Wyoming syndicate developed their name in the southwestern region and released their debut album Another Way through community label One Legged Pup Records.   Read More ...
The International Drive - May 18th , 2009

the international drive
The Warped Tour passes through North Carolina every year, but that doesn't necessarily mean the territory has a glorious pop punk scene. As a matter of fact, very few of those upbeat bands have been able to shine within the aggressive metal-dominated terrain. Fortunately, The International Drive is one of the few.

In 2006, the Raleigh-based entourage of 20-year-olds (then comprised of vocalist/guitarist Seth Milberger, lead guitarist Lee Crocker, bassist Colin Riley and drummer Chris Dillow) began branding their name at local venues like The Berkley Cafe and the Lincoln Theatre. Though rappers and hardcore artists dominated these venues, The I-Drive attracted a strong fan base ranging from grown folks to teenagers. But while they were branding their name, Crocker left the fold.

The melodic syndicate recruited Bryon Broaddus to fill the void and they immediately recorded their EP debut, Finish What You Started, released through Disco Technology and Tragic Hero. The collection personifies their vibe, which features emotional compositio Read More ...

When a band dresses up in spacesuits, sings punk rock songs about science and has a machine that shoots toilet paper rolls at audience members, they're going to garner some attention. The Phenomenauts are that band. Comprised of Commander Angel Nova, Corporal Joebot Twopointoh, Major Jimmy Boom, Captain Chreehos, Professor Greg Arius, Colonel Reehotch and Cadet Orbit (who they have deemed the world's handsomest space dog), the Oakland, CA band has been entertaining audiences for over half a decade.

With their latest album, For all Man Kind, hitting stores, 101D.com sat down with the band's guitarist - singer Commander Angel Nova to find out more about this unique group of musicians.

101D.com: Where do you guys draw your inspiration from?

Commander Angel Nova: Well, we love science and space and it's inspiring to think about going into space. On Star Trek when all the different races and cultures come together to go to space, it's cool. I was also always a huge Star Wars fan and into all sorts of sci-fi.
