Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from Justin Bieber's YouTube KO of Lady Gaga, to two artist injuries, to Bayside High's most decorated athlete's new VH1 venture. As an added bonus, this week we also have a Q&A with country pop star Jessie James, and since this is Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

* Bad news, universe. With more than 246 million views (and yes, I put my pinky to the corner of mouth as I typed that) Justin Bieber's video for "Baby" is now the most watched clip in the history of YouTube, passing Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" and making me question society as a whole. If people are going to spend time on YouTube they should at least be spending it wisely, by watching things like the Sharktopus trailer.

* Both Pink and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry landed in this hospital this past week. Pink found herself there after falling off the stage during a show in Germany w Read More ...

It's difficult not to heart The Hot Toddies. The beautiful Oakland-based quartet (comprised of Erin, Heidi, Jessica and Sylvia) lays charming vocals over easy listening pop rock melodicism that will simply make your heart sing.

Formed by Erin and Heidi in 2004 while lying on one of Mexico's delightful beaches, the duo began drinking whiskey together and writing songs for their lovable brainchild. A year later, Jessica and Sylvia joined in on the masquerade, and by 2006, they released their first EP. In 2007, they dropped their official debut album Smell The Mitten, an eleven-track collection that featured beautiful harmonies with a doo-wop vibe.

Now, three years later after touring 'round the globe, The Hot Toddies return with their sophomore set Get Your Heart On. Mixing 1950's beach pop with indie rock riffs, it's a tender ten-track collection where songs like "Only With You," "Slow Cookin'," and "Keep On Runnin'" will put your soul at ease. In fact, it'll make your heart and soul smile. That's what it does to us, at least.

Another track that will give you that sensation i Read More ...

Anton Cosmo has a bright future ahead of himself. The 27-year-old guitarist has already enjoyed a stint in legendary recording band Boston, co-wrote three songs for the group's fifth studio album Corporate America and made his live performance debut at the 2002 Fiesta Bowl.

While all of that is extremely impressive, the young musician has yet to scratch the surface. Between his modern rock, pop appeal and socio-conscious lyricism, Cosmo is looking to become a movement of his own - just like his favorite group ever.

"I love U2. I think they're the best band in the world and I always think they're gonna be," he says. "There's so much feeling in [Bono's] vocal and I love how The Edge plays guitar. He's not exactly a shredder, but he has so much style and love behind his guitar. He's a big influence, both those guys – playing guitar and singing. Some people compare me to Bono sometimes here and there, which is pretty cool."

Cosmo's solo movement is about to begin as he is on the verge of releasing his debut album The In Between, which features a hypnotic blend of modern rock and pop Read More ...
lindsay%20lohanWelcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from the new direction Lindsay Lohan's life is going in, to the new language Usher is singing in, to the new career aspirations of Snoop Dogg, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

* Lindsay Lohan's tears when she was sentenced to 90 days in jail for violating her probation had to be real - she's simply not that good an actress. What she is, however, is a total moron. Even if the judge had wanted to give the former teen star yet another chance, by writing the words "Fuck U" on the fingernail of the middle finger of her left hand, and at times putting that hand in such a way so everyone could see it, Lohan essentially threw that opportunity away. This give me an idea, though. With so many former Disney stars like Lohan, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera not doing so hot right now, perhaps a reality show is in order. They could call it 'The Disney Reclamation Project' and Read More ...

Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from Lilith Fair canceling a chunk of their tour, to Melissa Etheridge canceling her latest relationship, to Lady Gaga canceling President Obama's popularity, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

* I have some bad news for all the ladies out there that were hoping to rekindle some of the 90's magic they once had with their girlfriend during that lesbian phase of their collegiate life; if you were looking forward to the Lilith Fair you may have to grab some tissues as the tour has canceled close to a third of their planned shows this summer due to poor ticket sales. The affected stops are Salt Lake City (July 12), Montreal (July 23), Raleigh, N.C. (August 4) Charlotte, N.C. (August 6), West Palm Beach, Fla. (August 10), Tampa, Fla. (Aug 11), Birmingham, Ala. * In a bit of postmortem irony, after spending a significant amount of his life being in trouble with the law, 2Pac, along with R.E.M., Little Richard, Willie Nelson, and Patti Smith, is now being honored by Congress. 2Pac, along with the other artists listed, are part of the 25 new inductees into the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry. To be inducted, a song, or album, must be at least ten years old and be considered "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant." There are now 300 recordings in the registry. katy%20perryWelcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots has a very special announcement - we're one year old! That's right, today marks the one year anniversary of Pop Shots, and I'm proud to have brought you all the news of the pop world, complete with snarky commentary, every Wednesday for the past 52 weeks. Over the course of the next 52 weeks I hope to expand Pop Shots to include interviews along with the news and occasional special edition columns you know and love, but before we get to that I figured a party was in order, so I'm throwing one, RIGHT NOW. Check out who made the guest list with this exclusive live look in at what's going on at the official Pop Shots One Year Anniversary House Party (you had to know I'd be doing this Kid ‘N Play style!).

Lady Gaga and Katy Perry shot each other dirty looks as they walked in the door, with Perry bringing Snoop Dogg and a whole team of "California Gurls" with her, and Gaga wearing what looked to be the shell of a Fiat. knaanWelcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on all the "official" World Cup songs, to Eminem's leakage, to Belinda Carlisle's tell all book, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

* The World Cup has me supremely confused and it has nothing to do with the rules of soccer. Some of you may remember that quite a while ago K'naan's song "Wavin' Flag" was announced as the official song of the World Cup. Well, last week press releases from both Shakira's and R. Kelly's camps made claims that each of them also have such an honor, Shakira for her song "Waka Waka (This time for Africa)," which from the title sounds like it might have been penned by Fozzy Bear, and Kelly for his song "Sign of Victory." I don't know which song is actually the official song of the World Cup, but who wants to bet Kelly wrote his after he found out how big girls youth soccer is in America?

mark%20paulWelcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from recent relationship heartbreaks for a Saved By The Bell grad and Miley Cyrus, to M.I.A.'s heartbreak over bad press, to the heartbreak experienced by a bunch of spoiled princess when they get told You're Cut Off!, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

* Although he's still a high schooler in the minds of many of my generation, in reality Zack Morris is a fully grown man. Unfortunately, right now he's also an unhappy man as Mark-Paul Gosselaar and his wife recently separated after 13 years of marriage. The couple have two children together. In a related story, Miley Cyrus reportedly broke up with her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth. I know what you're thinking; two newly single people in Hollywood ... but one was graduating from Bayside High while the other was still in diapers. Actually since this is Hollywood we're talking about, stranger hookups have happened. Right, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Read More ...
Alicia%20KeysWelcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from who's not feeling like a winner after the Alicia Keys - Swizz Beatz engagement & pregnancy announcement, to the big winners coming from American Idol and the Eurovision Song Contest, to the huge loss 50 Cent recently experienced, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

* Alicia Keys is pregnant, and now engaged, to Swizz Beatz. There's only one little problem - Swizz was still technically married to recording artist Mashonda, with whom he has a child, when he and Keys started messing around. Personally, I'm not even sure I believe Swizz is really making all these babies. Knowing his history, Casio probably had a lot to do with the production.

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from why Miley Cyrus shouldn't be anywhere near your mouth, to why Justin Bieber might be at the BET awards, to why two 80's icons have been spending a lot of time in hospital beds, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

miley%20cyrus* This just in - you don't want to put Miley in your mouth! Yes, Britney Spears needs to move aside because Miley Cyrus has a whole new kind of "Toxic" for the kids as last week Wal-Mart had to pull an entire line of Miley Cyrus-brand necklaces and bracelets from its shelves after tests performed for The Associated Press found the jewelry contained high levels of the toxic metal cadmium. According to the AP, cadmium in jewelry is not known to be dangerous if the items are simply worn, but concerns come when a person bites or sucks on the jewelry. So no more biting or sucking on Miley until further notice!

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. For this week's edition of Pop Shots I'm going to be taking a look at an addiction that is sweeping the nation, and by the nation I mean my living room, but I know if it's in my living room it's probably in many of yours, as well. That addiction is teen TV. It started innocently enough in the 90's with Saved By The Bell, where we learned the dangers of caffeine pills and that school dances should be held a minimum of 50 times a semester. In 2010, however, with Nickelodeon having it's own teen oriented channel, and Disney making teen oriented programs, as well, the airwaves are loaded with teen TV. With that in mind, this week I'm taking a look at three teen TV shows that are actually pretty good, and qualify as reasons I don't have a DVR, because I did, and I was recording these programs, I'm fairly sure I'd be put on a list of some kind.

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from new roles for Miranda "iCarly" Cosgrove and Jordin Sparks, to new goals for Bret Michaels, to the new, untamable, video by Miley Cyrus, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

miranda%20cosgrove* It looks like Disney may have some competition in the teen actress/singer market as Nickelodeon's Miranda Cosgrove, who most people know as iCarly, landed at number eight on the Billboard Albums chart this past week with her full length debut, Sparks Fly. Hey, does anybody else remember when singers would get big and then try to be on TV, and actors having albums was an oddity? When did that get totally reversed? I think once all of this devolves into Snookie Sings The American Standards we'll see the ship start to right itself again.

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from all the unexpectedly positive talk coming out of Bret Michaels' camp, to the Country Music Awards' totally unexpected, and totally fantastic, choice of a host for their show, to something very unexpected coming out of a woman's nether regions, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

Bret%20Michaels* In the best news coming from Bret Michaels' camp in weeks, it looks like there's a distinct possibility the rocker might be able to make the live season finale of Celebrity Apprentice on May 23rd. Michaels, determined not to let the brain hemorrhage that sent him to the hospital get him down, also plans to resume touring on the 26th and expects to be on the road with Lynyrd Skynyrd this summer. A clear fan favorite on Celebrity Apprentice due to his good natured-ness, Michaels is someone I'm rooting for. Of course, I'm also rooting for Maria Kanellis, but that's for Read More ...
Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week, with the B.o.B - Bruno Mars collaboration, "Nothin' On You," reaching number one on the Billboard chart, Pop Shots is taking a look at the always interesting world of pop singers and rappers collaborating. It's a tough line to toe for both the singer and the rapper. While both are obviously looking to expand their audience, as B.o.B. certainly has from his "Haterz Everywhere" days, both sides risk damaging their reputations in the process. Has the rapper gone soft? Is the pop artist trying too hard to be something they're not? Are BOTH sides selling out?

In the annals of pop music history there are hundreds, maybe even thousands, of such collaborations, many of them due to the fact that Jennifer Lopez would have had a hard time getting on the charts any other way. Some of these collaborations are memorable, while some of them qualify as something else entirely. The following are prime examples of the best, worst, and most confusing pop singer - rapper collaborations of all-time.

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with a special edition of the column dedicated to a battle between two 80's teen queens that is still raging on today in a new, and very enjoyable, way.

If you were alive in the 80's, the music of Debbie Gibson and Tiffany was completely unavoidable. Whether you were shaking your love, celebrating your electric youth, or simply thought you were alone now, you had at least some of these ladies' lyrics ingrained in your brain in ways that even the maddest of mad scientists couldn't imagine.

The constant radio airplay and mall tours ended a long time ago, though. Debbie now goes by Deborah, the two posed for Playboy, with Tiffany appearing in the April 2002 issue and Gibson in March 2005, and in 2010, they've found a new way to take each other on - in B-movies involving giant creatures that have a love of destroying things. For this installment of Pop Shots, I'm going to compare the qualities of Deborah Gibson's and Tiffany's sci-fi flicks.

Every week, 101D.com will highlight up-and-coming talent in our exclusive Diamonds In The Rough series. This week, we proudly present Kayo. The 19-year-old "Princess of the South" is a versatile artist from the Sunshine State who sings, raps and writes all of her music. Aside from that, she is also the President of PoeEtiq Ink Enertainment, the Spokesmodel of Hip Hop National and an avid shoe collector. Yeah, her sneaker game is sick!

Background Check: There is something extraordinarily special about Kayo. It isn't necessarily her impeccable drive, gentle spirit or monstrous shoe collection (although those are contributing factors), but it's her flawless singing and rap ability. In fact, she's so on her game that she runs circles around some of today's more popular urban female artists like Kid Sister, Lil' Mama and Teyana Taylor. The self-proclaimed "Princess of the South" started singing in church choirs and at Fort Lauderdale talent shows when she was five-years-old. Ten years later, her father Al Williams helped her navigate through the industry, which resulted in Kayo entering the studio and record Read More ...
snoop%20doggWhile Snoop Dogg is reasonably one of Hip-Hop's most successful artists, he is branching out in ways that were never imagined. Snoop has tapped Britain's Got Talent alum Susan Boyle for a new project. "She's a great artist - I'm looking forward to going into the studio with her, why not? We're going to get our minds together and figure out what we're going to sing about," Snoop told The Sun. "I'm down with that. There isn't much I can't do."

Last year, Boyle wowed the world with her singing on the UK reality show, leading to a record deal and global stardom. Several artists have been looking toward Boyle for collaborations, but by far the most obscure one is that of her and Snoop Dogg. Details on the project have yet to be disclosed, but whatever comes of it should be nothing less than interesting.

It takes one hell of a successful rap artist to crossover far enough to tap someone like Susan Boyle for a project. This decision Snoop has made is pretty monumental, considering his origins in the game. Mr. 'Nuttin But a G Thang,' 'Gin & Juice,' etc. etc. is going Read More ...
Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from the pricey passes for Lollapalooza, to the sales dip the labels didn't see coming, to potentially costly legal troubles for Erykah Badu and Kanye West, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude. Truly, it's a miracle, like f*ckin magnets.

lady%20gaga* Lollapalooza has announced its headliners for this year and they're big, I mean REALLY big. Lady Gaga, Green Day and a reunited Soundgarden lead a lineup of more than 130 acts that are set to perform at the three day festival. Unfortunately, the price tag for the event is just as big, with three day passes going for $215 each. Admittedly, it's still less than Coachella's $269 three day pass, but both of them make you realize how great a deal the one day, 40+ band, Warped Tour is at under $30 a ticket.

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from the good of Lilith Fair switching things up, and new albums from Amy Grant and Christina Aguilera, to the evil of having to hear more from Paris Hilton and Perez Hilton, and Green Day's alleged thievery, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

ricky%20martin* Before I get to all the good and evil of the week, a news story broke that was past the deadline for Pop Shots, but was far too big to let slide until next week, and that was, of course, Ricky Martin's not-so-shocking announcement that he's gay. One of my buddies wondered why Martin didn't go for a big money payout for his coming out but I have to wonder if any tabloid would have given him a significant chunk of change for making an announcement that was akin to "the sky is blue." Despite everyone having at least an inkling as to Martin's sexuality I'll still applaud him for his courage to announce it so publicly. The height of Read More ...

Aguilera's been hard at work in the studio for the past year and is pleased to announce the release of her highly anticipated 4th studio album Bionic (RCA Records) this summer. The first single from Bionic is the fiercely energetic anthem "Not Myself Tonight", produced by Polow Da Don. The song will premiere on ChristinaAguilera.com at 6pm EDT on 3/30, impacts radio on 4/5 and will be available on iTunes on 4/13.

Bionic features songs co-written by Aguilera along with her much buzzed about collaborations including Sia, Tricky Stewart, Polow Da Don, Le Tigre, Hill & Switch, and Ladytron among others. Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from the incredibly large amount of money Lady Gaga is being sued for by her ex, to the one smart, and one stupid, business move made by major labels this past week, to the NINE figure deal the Michael Jackson estate signed with Sony that will make sure we'll be hearing more of the king of pop's music for many years to come. Oh, and there's also a guy who likes coffee ... a lot, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything, even the coffee, is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

lady%20gaga* It's been a mixed week for the new queen of pop as Lady Gaga found herself breaking yet another chart recored, but also being sued for an amount of money that would make Dr. Evil proud. First, Gaga's latest single, "Telephone," reached the top spot on the radio airplay chart, giving her six #1s, which ties her for the most since the Nielsen BDS-based radio airplay chart launched in 1992. Girlicious, for those who don't remember, which I'm sure is all of you, is the Pussycat Dolls' reality show spinoff group that had done nothing even remotely noteworthy until this. The best part of the entire story is that according to the AP, "Mejia said the drugs were not hers and claimed she didn't know how they got into her purse." The coke fairy strikes again! "I wanted it big, I wanted it dramatic, I wanted a rock record," Meat Loaf said about the new album. "Yes, it sounds like a Meat Loaf record. Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. This week Pop Shots is hitting you with a theme based column that's all about pop tarts. Not the kind you eat, but the kind you listen to.

Back in 1999 there was an explosion of blonde haired teen pop stars that was led by a former Mousketeer named Britney Spears. Her debut single, "...Baby One More Time," became a landmark song and as soon as it blew up the record industry was ready to trot out any clone they could find. The scene became flooded with blond pop tarts, some talented, some not so much so. Unfortunately for those singers, Pop Tarts tend to go stale fairly quickly, and now that it's been a little over a decade most of them have seen their time pass. That's why this week I'm strolling through the music industry's breakfast aisle, taking a look at which acts have replaced the pop tarts that are no longer quite as tasty.

kate%20nashKate Nash will release the follow up to her 2008 critically acclaimed debut Made Of Bricks on April 20th here in the U.S. on Fiction/ Geffen Records. The as yet untitled album was produced by former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler and recorded at RAK studios in the UK.

The tracking listing for Kate Nash's sophomore release is: "You'll Never Listen," "Kiss That Girl," "Don't You Want To Share The Guilt," "I Just Love You More," "Do Wah Doo," "Higher Price," "I've Got A Secret," "Mansion Song,"  "Oh Jay," "Later On," "Pickpocket," "You Were So Far Away," and "I Hate Seagulls."

From the outset Kate knew where she wanted to go on her second outing but with the worldwide success and nearly two years of touring after the US release of Made of Bricks in 2008, she took time out to write this album and do "normal things."  Those normal things consisted of finding her first flat, learning to drive and looking after her pet rabbit Fluffy!  Kate learned to play drums and in 2009 became part of a new punk band called The Receeders for which she plays bass!

Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from MTV ditching a part of their old logo, to an old rock band performing at an old haunt, to an older woman being credited with bringing sexy back in the 80's. And since this is Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

In the Playboy interview heard round the internets, Mayer dropped the N-bomb and proclaimed his penis was a white supremacist. In the same interview he also described Jessica Simpson as "sexual napalm" (side note to Jessica - I love the smell of napalm in the morning). Wentz was quoted by the AP saying that it's all been "blown out of proportion." Fans should not be expecting a solo project from Wentz, though, as he noted that's never been an aspiration of his. "TiK ToK's" lyrics may be the definition of vapid, but when discussing the song with a prominent DJ (whaddup Halo) we both noted that despite its content "TiK ToK's" verses and hooks are put together really well musically and the song is a DJs best friend when it comes to getting people on a dance floor. After last week's first half of Pop Shots' Top 10 Pop Songs of the Decade I know how much you've been eagerly awaiting the next installment, which is why this week's Pop Shots is coming to you a day early. So without further adieu, here are Pop Shots' picks as the top five pop songs of the decade.

justin%20timberlake5)    Justin Timberlake - Cry Me a River (2002)

"Sexyback" may have launched Timberlake to new heights as an adult artist, but it was "Cry Me a River" that set him up for such a launch. The tale of betrayal, complete with a creepy operatic sample that helped to make the beat one of Timbaland's best, wasn't subtle when it came to who it was about, and the personal nature of it made it that much more hard hitting. "Cry Me a River" was also that rare song that took advantage of Timberlake's full range as a singer. This was his most mature work up to that point, and, in my opinion, is still his best song. The video was also fantast Read More ...
It's here, the list you've waited ten years for (which was difficult being that this column hasn't existed that long) - Pop Shots' Top 10 Pop Songs of the Decade!  Before getting to the list, however, I want to really quickly go over the standards for it.  Anyone could simply list the ten most popular songs based on their time on the charts, or album/single sales, and although those things should obviously play a factor in any list of this kind, I don't think they should be the only factors.  For this list, in addition to being a big hit, I wanted to make sure the songs were actually good songs, either lyric-wise, or production-wise.  I also wanted to make sure the songs had some real staying power and could easily be played 5-10 years after they were first released and still have their intended impact.  My feeling is, if they're the top ten songs of the decade, they should have some staying power in our collective pop consciousness.  That being said, here are songs 10-6 of Pop Shots' Top 10 Pop Songs of the Decade.

elton%20johnAmong the many highlights on Black Gives Way To Blue, the highly anticipated new album from ALICE IN CHAINS, is a special guest performance by Elton John. The two rock legends collaborated on the album's stunning title track, "Black Gives Way To Blue," a heart-stirring tribute to Alice In Chains' late lead singer Layne Staley. The album arrives in stores September 29.

"We were thinking about adding piano to the track and a friend suggested we call Elton," recalls guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell. "I remember laughing and saying, ‘Yeah, I'll get right on that.' But I decided it was worth trying and wrote Elton an email explaining what that song means to us—that it's a real, raw openhearted song for Layne. We sent him the track and got a call shortly after saying he thought it was beautiful and that he wanted to play on it. We were blown away. Elton John is a huge influence on me as a songwriter and having him on that song is an amazing honor for us."

Other nominees included KISS, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donna Summer, Darlene Love and LL Cool J. Record mogul David Geffen and songwriters Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry, Jesse Stone, Mort Shuman and Otis Blackwell were also inducted in non-performing categories.

Talking to Rolling Stone, Iggy Pop of the Stooges said, "We've been rejected seven times, and we would have set a record, I think, if it happened again. owl%20city* In a huge win for synth-pop, Owl City claimed the top spot on the Billboard singles chart this past week with "Fireflies." What I really dig about this is that "Fireflies" had a slow build. It's almost as if, for the first time in what seems like forever, a major label put a song out there and just let people discover it. "Fireflies" wasn't shoved down our throats.  I remember getting the single in the mail in mid-July. I'm glad they gave it time and let the fan base build for it. I'm also glad Owl City is teaming up with Lights for a tour in 2010. That should be an amazing show and I can't wait to check it out.

His debut single "Whatcha Say," quickly reached #2 on The BILLBOARD Top 100 and # 3 on ITUNES and has sold over 1.4 million singles thus far.  He is set to hit the road with Lady Gaga and Kid Cudi in December. After being discovered by super producer J.R. Rotem, American Idol judge, and Warner Bros. Senior Vice President of A&R Kara DioGuardi signed Derulo as the flagship artist for the new Beluga Heights /Warner Bros joint venture.

Jason joins Lady Gaga's North American tour "Monster Ball" starting December 27th.  The tour, which also features Kid Cudi, is the perfect union for two pop stars who both got their start as songwriters. Jason is thrilled to be part of a tour that is expected to be one of the hottest of the year. He told MTV news, "I am a big Gaga fan, I was talking about being on that tour for a pretty long time, and it's amazing that it actually fell in my lap like that.  I can't wait, I'm super excited I'm amped."

Based in the City of Brotherly Love, this group has been trudging away on the independent circuit, up and down the East Coast, drawing upon the previous era's mark on alternative music to inspire the creation of their own special brand.

Formed shortly after the birth of the new millennium, the band known as Title Fight had every intention of making music that appealed to a specific demographic – one charmed by the infectious melodies and rebellious lyrics purveyed by bands like Blink-182, Sum 41 and so many more.

Although they have no plan of remaining pigeonholed by any particular genre limitations, singer/bassist Ned says their formula was certainly honed by the band members' collective influences.  "When we first started out we definitely just wanted to be a pop punk band," he explains. "We were 13 and strictly listening to Blink-182 so it just made perfect sense to start a band just like that Through Blink we got into bands like Lifetime, Saves the Day, and The Movielife and I still love those bands."

rihanna* Rihanna made her fans giddy and her detractors even more detracting this past week with the release of "Russian Roulette," a single that was clearly made in order to create controversy. Before I get to the meat and potatoes of the song, you can bet on at least one family suing her, her label, and anyone associated with her, if a kid shoots themselves anytime in the next six months and happens to have it on their hard drive.  Vocally, Rihanna actually sounds decent on "Russian Roulette."  Maybe she wanted to make up for her voice cracking really terribly at the end of "Run This Town" (and we have to assume that was the best of all the takes).  When it comes to the actual content of the song, however, I'm just Read More ...

Sterling Heart
Representin' Lake Forest, California

Background Check: Dani Poppitt seems like a clever, witty, philosophical kind of gal - for a high school student, that is. In fact she tries proving it by elaborately describing how her band, Sterling Heart, came into existence. "In 1893, the sun found its place in the sky on a Wednesday," she begins. "Zeus struck us down from the heavens. We landed in a meadow surrounded by flowers and caterpillars. This meadow was located at the heart of Lake Forest." While this meeting appears more like an introduction for the Greek rendition of Lord Of The Rings, Poppitt launched Sterling Heart in 2008 and finalized the lineup this past April (also consisting of Read More ...

* Last week a man allegedly punched the world's most boring pop singer, Leona Lewis, in the face during one of her book signings. Apparently he wanted to see if a stiff shot would cause her to start "Bleeding Love." Seriously, though, who knew Chris Brown was such a big Leona Lewis fan? All joking aside (at least temporarily), how mad is Lewis that the most interesting thing to ever happen to her isn't actually in her book, but rather, happened to her at a signing for it?

WeezerWeezer continues to break loyal fan's hearts with their abrupt dive into the world of teen pop.

Their upcoming release, 'Raditude' features a recorded song with Lil Wayne and includes other tracks with titles like 'The Girl Got Hot' and 'I'mYour Daddy' Those titles alone should let you know how bizarre this album this will be.

Now in a recent interview on Buzznet, Rivers Cuomo revealed that he has set plan to work with popstar Katy Perry. He said the two have arranged to meet up in the studio next week to possibly record material for her new album.

Probably the only thing Weezer has done recently that's worth talking about is their 'wuggie', which is just like a snuggie, only with the name Weezer on it. While this is a bit humorous, they have gone to the extent of actually teaming up with the company that manufactures the blanket clothing.

Sadly, the wuggie is the only decision the band has made in the past couple years that hasn't resulted in cringing from fans.

"Chasing Pirates"—which is currently featured on Rolling Stone's "Hot List"—immediately announces a new direction for Jones. "For this record, I just had a sound in my head," she says. "I wanted the grooves to be more present and heavy. And I also just wanted to do something different."

That new sound began to present itself on one of the first songs Jones wrote for the project. "About a year ago, I did some demos in my home studio," she says. Welcome to a special edition of Pop Shots, the one column you can always count on to give you your weekly dose of pop world musings. This week the entire focus of Pop Shots is going to be on tour combinations that failed. Sure, plenty of superstars have successfully teamed for tours, but it's the train wrecks, some of which never even got off the ground, that are really fun to talk about. Some of the following combinations seemed like good ideas at the time, while others were obviously doomed to fail from the get go. Let's start with the most recent tour fail, that of Lady Gaga and Kanye West.

lady%20gaga* Lady Gaga and Kanye West - Fame Kills was going to be the name of the tour, but the only killing it did was of itself. Apparently ticket sales were poor, although that should really come as no surprise as, despite both being pop radio faves, Gaga and Kanye's fan bases don't exactly crossover. So in essence, this was a tour where fans of each artist were asked to pony up a healthy increase in the amount they would normally have to pay for a ticket just because an artist they have little to no interest Read More ...

dan%20blackSeldom has an album twisted so thrillingly through so many styles, nor over-flowed with so much melody and feeling. Little wonder that Black is being tipped by the world's critics and bloggers as one of 2010's most promising break through artists. If his name already rings a bell, that's perhaps because you've heard everyone from Zane Lowe to Perez Hilton raving about HYPNTZ, the Notorious BIG cover which first brought Black to the world's attention when unsigned in 2008.

During this time, Black was mainly hunched over his laptop writing, tinkering, writing, recording and then writing some more. "I knew that unless I had great songs, it was all a bit pointless," he says. "I think I wrote 70 songs in that time." By his own admission, many of them were rubbish. But it quickly became clear that quite a few weren't. Tracks like the shimmering, lysergic lullaby Life Slash Dreams, the wistful, New Order-esque WonderU + Me = began to spill out of him; sonically contrasting, but all driven by Black's obvious knack for a catchy melody and a sharp, meaningful lyric. and the strident, big Read More ...

lady%20gagaFor Lady Gaga, it's easier to re-release your debut album rather than facing fears of sophomore slump syndrome.

Due out November 24th, 'The Fame Monster' is set to include more than just a few new tracks. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the singer attempted to defend herself stating that she thought re-issued albums to be unfair.

“It’s artists sneaking singles onto an already finished piece of work in an effort to keep the album afloat," she said. "Originally [my label] only wanted e to put out three songs and now it’s much more than that. It’s a new album’s worth of material.”

A pair of headphones has been designed by both Dr. Dre and Lady Gaga called 'Heartbeats'. They announced at a press conference about a collaboration, confirming that they have plans to share tracks and discuss a course of action.

It seems strange to me that Lady Gaga is touring with Kanye West and spending time in the studio with Dr. Dre. Maybe they haven't found out yet that she was that strange girl they used to pick on in high school?

Lily Allen found this out the hard way last week when she posted a blog about her thoughts on illegal downloading and the resulting conflagration turned into such a huge mess that she ended up taking down the blog and then announcing she has no plans to extend her recording contract once it's up. Does this mean that Lily Allen could be done making music? Personally, I hope not, and I hope that she keeps voicing her opinions on music industry related topics, as well. Britney%20SpearsAfter 'If U Seek Amy' was released and goblets were thrown by pro-censorship parents, Britney Spears decided to push more buttons with her new single, '3', that leaves no mystery as to its subject matter.

The pop princess still thinks its vital to make music and is releasing a greatest hits album to accompany her latest song. To be released on November 24th, her 'Singles Collection' will include '3' as the only new track. Isn't this greatest hits album number two for the tabloid resident? The same songs must be included on both, how could she possibly generate content for two hits albums?

To give an idea without forcing you to endure a few minutes of fluff, the song repeats barely clever verses that center around...you guessed it...a threesome. “Three is a charm, two is not the same. I don’t see the harm, so are you game?” and “If you don’t like the company, let’s just do it you and me. You and me… Or three… Or four…” satisfy the creative peak of the track.

* Avril Lavigne, who hasn't been in the public eye since threatening world sanity with her "hey hey, you you, I don't like your girlfriend" atrocity of a song, has broken up with her husband of three years, Sum41 lead singer (does that group even still exist?) Deryck Whibley. Whibley is reportedly "crushed" over the whole thing, although to be fair, it isn't hard to crush a leprechaun. Lavigne plans on celebrating her newfound single-hood by wreaking havoc in malls while bemoaning how "Complicated" life is.

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from Kanye West's "outburst" at the VMA's, to American Idol's newest addition, to VH1's interesting definition of diva, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

kanye%20west%20taylor%20swift* A lot of people have been asking me about my thoughts regarding Kanye West's "outburst" at the VMAs on Sunday. Honestly, I think the entire "incident" was staged. Here are some of the reasons why – 1) MTV not only plans out the order of when each award will be given out, but they also know who is winning which awards. It's seems more than just convenient that Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift to talk about Beyonce only to then have Beyonce win later on in the night and ask Swift to come on stage with her. 2) The fact that Swift changed into a dress to match Beyonce's for the "moment." 3) Kanye always rants about the greatness of himself, or something he did, not about the greatness of others. 4) Of all the artists Read More ...

Oftentimes when an artist creates a great debut album they have a hard time following it up with their sophomore effort, so nobody would have blamed Alison Sudol, aka A Fine Frenzy, if Bomb In A Birdcage wasn't quite on the level of One Cell In The Sea. Truthfully, it's not on the same level. It's even better.

Sudol has one of the most emotive voices around and the way she combines it with her poetic songwriting style and mood setting music makes for a fantastic listening experience. On Bomb In A Birdcage Sudol not only recreates some of the vibes from One Cell In The Sea, but also plays with a few new ones, most notably on the intense "Stood Up" and decidedly pop "Electric Twist." On the latter Sudol even takes aim at those who scoff at her very non-pop star sensibilities with the opening lines:

"You should be wilder
You're no fun at all
Yeah thanks for the input
Thanks for the call"

There's some playful irony with "Electric Twist" in that it's the most fast paced song on the album, yet it's also the song on which she admits to, and even makes f Read More ...
Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. michael%20franti* With so many terrible things going on in the world I think it's great to hear Michael Franti's "Say Hey (I Love You)" getting major airplay. Franti and his band, Spearhead, have always been one of the most politically active groups in music, but with the fun and beautiful "Say Hey" they may be making their greatest statement yet - it's cool to be happy and say how much you love someone. It may sound pretty basic, but it's said so rarely nowadays that when someone finally does sing about it again it brings about a really refreshing vibe. Heck, every time I hear the song I just want to grab the first cute girl I see and start dancing with her. In fact ... you, over there ... let's make it happen lit Read More ...

When your roommate drinks all your beer, usually all you get out of it is a trip to the store. When Dude Offline found his roommate had committed this heinous crime against him, he skipped the store and instead made a song that became one of the longest running hits in college radio history.

The song, titled "You Suck You Drank My Beer," was a punk rock gem that stayed in college radio's top ten for over a full year. After recording music for over two decades with various different bands and under an equal amount of monikers, however, Dude Offline was starting to feel a little burned out. He needed some new inspiration.

Sometimes inspiration can be found at home, but in Dude Offline's case it took going from his native west coast, where he has lived in Los Angeles, Seattle and Phoenix, to the Ukraine. "I had an apartment in the Urkaine," he explains, "because my fiancé is in Moldova, so we would stay in Odessa, Ukraine, and commute back and forth."

It was during his trips to see his fiancé that Dude Offline made a musical discovery. "I noticed that when I was in Europe, they play mostly dance beats with the Read More ...
Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from Chris Brown's almost instantaneous probation violation, to Britney Spears' songwriters' insane concept of rhyming words, to the strangest new pairing in all of music, and since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

Chris%20Brown* This past week Chris Brown was finally sentenced for his assaulting of Rihanna. He ended up with no actual jail time, but five years probation, an order to stay away from Rihanna until 2014, fines, counseling, community service, and strict orders to "abstain from the use of all alcoholic beverages and stay out of places where they are the chief item of sale." So how did Brown celebrate staying out of the slammer? By immediately violating the terms of his probation, of course! Just one day, ONE DAY, after having his sentence handed down to him Brown was seen living it up at a 21+ nightclub where, you guessed it, alcoholic beverages were the chief item of sale. jupiter%20oneA Sunshower can be a rare occurrence, but when these opposing forces meet, magic and allure is in the air. This is exactly why the NYC-based rockers, Jupiter One, chose the title (inspired by the Japanese short film Dreams by Akira Kurosawa) for their upcoming Ryko album available September 15, 2009. Their lyrics might be too mature for some scene kids to handle and their sound is a little heavier than the flavor spewed by most pop-punk bands, but Down For The Count doesn't care. This piercing collective has their own identity - one that has won the hearts of many fans who can handle their sincere style.

Last night for instance, the band headlined a packed show at in Nashville, Tennessee at The Anchor – a venue that is attached to a church. Although they aren't the pop-punk version of Creed or a Christian band by any means, Down For The Count doesn't mind rocking out in God's House. In fact, they kinda prefer it to a regular concert hall.

"A lot of the time, church shows make for really good shows because the youth group kids are really supportive and kids usually buy merch," front man Nate Sirotta explains. "The kids are usually more receptive and it's a cooler vibe sometimes because when you play just normal clubs or venues, those typical scenester kids are kinda tough to win over. But if you play in churches, the kids are just happy to have bands, so they're just happy and receptive. Churches have defi Read More ...

U2Refusing to label their new project as a musical, U2 has explained that their music will accompany a Spider-Man themed production set to debut on Broadway in New York during 2010.

Characters in the show, Turn Off The Dark, will not resemble those in the Marvel comic books, nor the high grossing motion picture. While U2 is confirmed to write all the music and lyrics, they will not appear in the production themselves. Actress Evan Rachel Wood of Thirteen and The Wrestler, will be starring as MJ. Turn Off The Dark will feature a new female villain and a different spin on Peter Parker. Frontman Bono described the character as a sly slacker who isn't similar to Kurt Cobain.

The show is directed by Julie Taymor and is expected to leak more information in the next couple of months.

The BBC interviewed both U2 members Bono and The Edge:

"The guitarist was keen not to describe the production, directed by Julie Taymor, as a musical, but rather an "opera." It is a new challenge. The thing is we don't really like musicals. Safari So Good has so much fun that they almost forget to plug their EP debut Every Fight Is A Food Fight When You're A Cannibal. All you need to know is in the titles, 'The Girl Got Hot' and 'I'm Your Daddy'. How an alternative rock band like Weezer could put out these songs without thinking they're terrible is beyond me. Doesn't Rivers Cuomo's Harvard degree prevent him from producing awful song like this? I guess he got his degree in English, not Music. I still think a Harvard English grad could come up with better quality lyrics than this.

An avid Weezer fan myself, I normally don't get excited when I hear the news of a new Weezer release. I get nervous. Weezer fans are a strange breed who find pleasure in critiquing the band's every move. Nobody will be able to forgive the 'Beverly Hills' single that received backlash from fans once they heard their little si Read More ...

In order to promote the Beatles' Rock Band, the fab four has granted QVC a one-month exclusive deal. The home-shopping designed network will be putting up remastered versions of Beatles' albums advertised as 'one month before their release'.

The demographic for QVC viewers is typically middle aged women who probably already own all of the Beatles albums on vinyl that they bought decades ago. The appeal of 'remastered' versions may not exactly strike up interest among those who actually lived through Beatlemania.

Obviously a plot to gain more income for EMI, the network is offering 'limited edition bundles' of the new Rock Band game, which is scheduled to hit stores September 9th.

Hypebot has printed the QVC advertisement. It reads:

And since it's Pop Shots you know everything is seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

Vanessa%20hudgens* Singer/Actress Vanessa Hudgens had more nude photos "leaked" onto the internet this past week, just in time to coincide with the hype for her latest movie, Bandslam.  Part of me is slightly disgusted for thinking that all this could be intentional.  The pics were from when she was 17 and I really don't want to think someone in her camp felt the best way to get press was to "leak" naked pictures of their then underage star.  This is Hollywood we're talking about, though, so I wouldn't put it past someone to do it.  In a related story, where can I find a girl who's gonna snap some phone camera pics like that for me?  (Only those over 18 need apply.)

101D-listers, can you believe we're in August?! It's like the year is almost over. 2010 is well on its way. Where the hell did 2009 go? I hope everyone has had a kickass summer thus far, engaging in various types of music to move you through the summer heat. Yeah that was so cheesy, but I could care less. It's my column!

So now that we are well past the halfway mark of 2009, I was playing on Spin Magazine's site and they put up the 20 Best Albums of 2009 ... so far. I usually don't trust those "listy" things since, like who knows who compiles them. However, this time my world was rocked because a personal favorite of mine was actually featured at Number One - Ida Maria. Then I was like, "OMG, she's Norwegian! As in, ‘Across the Pond!'" Don't judge me. Please.

A little background on Ida Maria - she released an album earlier this year titled Fortress Round My Heart and I must say, if you're looking for some pleasant voiced pixie you're in the wrong place. Ida keeps it grimy with tons of raspy wails and coos, but still somehow remains Pop. You have to respect her gangsta. Janis Joplin invented that formula, and the world of raspy chicks followed suit. So now we have another, Miss Ida Maria, who is a worthy welcome into that list. Spin loves her, I love her, a Read More ...

"Count With Me!"* Entertainment Weekly just came out with their list of the Top 20 film and TV vampires of all-time and it's a list that totally sucks up (pun intended) to the new vamps on the block, Twilight and True Blood, as well as Tom Cruise (Number ONE?!?!  What, did he write the damned article?), while completely ignoring some of my personal faves.  Thankfully, they gave Angel a mention at seven, but nowhere on the list were his fellow Buffy bloodsuckers Spike, Drusilla and Darla.  The list also ignored Dark Shadows and left off the greatest TV vamp of all - Count von Count, aka The Count, from Sesame Street.  I mean, if you can include a Twilight character you can include a Sesame Street character, they pract Read More ...

There are two distinct sides to singer Sarah Blackwood. First there's Sarah Blackwood the country rock artist who just released her first solo album, Way Back Home. Then there's her alter ego Sarah SIN, the lead vocalist and guitarist for the pop punk band The Creepshow. With the numerous punk rock shows she went to with her friends, her father's impressive record collection, and her own life experiences acting as influences, both sides of her musical personality developed simultaneously. At 19 she moved to Whistler, BC, to snowboard and during the four years she was there she hit the stage for the first time. "The song's obviously not about being in love," Boys Like Girls frontman Martin Johnson told MTV News, "It's about giving the F.U. to a relationship and a situation. It's fun, it's celebrating – skipping your way out gracefully with a nice flip of the bird, rather than crying your way home to mommy."

He adds that the new album is the first one the band has recorded that is not centered on any one concept.

"At this point, the best way to describe the new album is My Chemical Romance being the purest, most distilled version of itself," Way says. Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from Shakira's latest single to Demi Lovato's arrival to Sugar Ray covering one of the biggest Hip-Hop songs of the year. All seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

Shakira* While I'm thrilled that Shakira managed to work the word lycanthropy into her latest single, "She Wolf," I'm saddened to say it doesn't change the fact that the song is all kinds of terrible. I am a huge Shakira fan, but "She Wolf" is way below standards for her.  It doesn't show off her vocal range, it has a weak "produced" sounding beat, and at its very core it's basically a "lite" pop song. I never thought I'd say it, but Shakira has given us fluff.  The Shakira I love has huge vocals and musically dynamic songs. Can we find that Shakira and bring her back?

* When I noticed Demi Lovato's "Here We Go Again" was rocketing up the charts it goes without saying that I wanted to give it a listen to hear what all the buzz was about. Lovato is one of the Disney kids whose name ha Read More ...
Backstreet%20BoysBoy band heart throbs, The Backstreet Boys, are set to release their eight album this October. The album is said to include a collaboration with rapper T-Pain, who Brian Littrell described as the 'hottest thing since sliced bread.' The new release is reportedly titled 'This Is Us' which ironically doesn't include former member, Kevin Richardson, in the mix. Leaving the band in 2006 to start a family, there's no mention as to why the singer hasn't returned to the group for the album.

Nick Carter has stated, “We’re really excited to release this new album and know that our fans are excited too. We worked with a group of amazing artists and producers that we’ve never worked with before, exploring new sounds and territory and know the final product turned out incredible.”

A European tour has already been scheduled with North American dates to follow shortly.
kristina%20trainOn October 20, Blue Note Records will release Spilt Milk, the debut album from singer Kristina Train . Train - who was born in New York City and raised in Savannah, Georgia - has made an urbane, soulful, and lush debut that showcases her stunning voice. Train will be hitting the road in the coming weeks, giving audiences around the country an early chance to hear her perform the affecting songs from her debut in a live setting. In addition to showcase performances in New York City at Joe's Pub (July 29) and Rockwood Music Hall (August 3 & 5), and in Los Angeles at the Hotel Café (August 19), Train will also be opening for singer Chris Isaak on a month-long string of tour dates that kick-off on August 8 in Houston, Texas. BlinkPop-punkers Blink 182 began their tour in Las Vegas last night to a sold out crowd of 4,000 adoring fans. The band played a 22 song set that included work mostly from their most recent three albums.

Swearing like sailors and referencing 'your mom' more than any human every should, the band gave no implication that they have lost their touch. After drummer Travis Barker has starred on a reality show that ended in divorce and nearly ended his life in a plane crash, he still manages to amaze the crowd. The most talked about aspect of the show was his rotating drumkit. Able to levitate while playing a solo, his antics were clearly the highlight of the performance.

madonnacelebration'Celebration' will be the title of Madonna's upcoming Greatest Hits album that is due out September 28th. Wait, hasn't she put out a greatest hits compilation before?

The two-disc album is said to include the 37 hits that have made the Billboard Top Ten list. Quite an accomplishment as she is the only artist to have that number of songs on the Billboard in 30 years. Out of the 37 chart-toppers, she had 7 No. 1 Albums and 12 No. 1 singles.

The entire tracklist isn't available yet but her press release has already confirmed that 'Everybody', 'Express Yourself', 'Vogue', and 'Four Minutes' will be included.

The cover features Madonna in a Marilyn Monroe screen print style, much like Andy Warhol's famous designs in the sixties. In fact, it's practically identical. The artist is called, "Mr. Brainwash", who stakes his reputation on "throwing cultural icons into a blender and turning it up to eleven." I guess throwing icons into a blender is another expression for replicating the work of Warhol.

Whitney%20HoustonThree and half years in the making, Whitney Houston's 'I Look To You' previewed last night during a listening party in New York City.

The singer and longtime diva acquired inspiration from her mother and long time manager Clive Davis. Houston said that three years ago she had plans to live on her own island and open up a fruit stand until they reached her. Her mother, Sissy, claimed that she was "tired of hearing everything on the radio" and was "tired of people taking their clothes off."

The new tracks were widely received in an extremely diverse audience that included Martha Stewart and Steve Harvey. How did they get an invite?

Set for a September release, the album is said to have collaborations with Alicia Keys, Akon and R. Kelly among others. With a powerful start, hopefully the former grammy winner can take the world by storm just as she did back in the 90s.

saint alvia cartel
Ben Rispin might never strut his stuff for fashion judges on Project Runaway, but this husky vocalist has a very distinct presence. Last summer, the Canadian and the rest of his cohorts from the Saint Alvia Cartel (also comprised of vocalist/guitarist Rob Pasalic, bassist Greg Fisher, guitarist Greg Taylor, organist Brandon Bliss and drummer Matt Richmond) were performing at the Warped Tour, and when he got off the stage, the happy-go-lucky scruffy-bearded singer was making new friends with teenage admirers.

Appearance aside, his voice demands attention. It's aggressive during the sextet's self-titled debut, but even more intense when he cuts radio spots like he did for the Strombo Radio show. "Monster Truck mayhem commercials may be my next career," he says with a chuckle.

By the way it looks, however, Rispin won't be out of a job anytime soon. In 2005, Rispin just got finished with his previous group Video Dead and was looking for something different to do. madonnaTwo deaths and eight injuries resulted Thursday night during the setup of Madonna's stage for her Sticky and Sweet tour.

In the town of Marseilles, France, the roof collapsed onto workers who were busy preparing the show in the Velodrome, a huge venue that seats close to 66,000. Currently under investigation, the show has been canceled. The 'Material Girl' herself was kind enough to pay a visit to those currently hospitalized before her scheduled performance in Spain tonight.

New York Daily News provides more details:

With 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes, and her two youngest children, David Banda and Mercy, in tow, the performer was dressed in black as she arrived in the French city to visit the family of injured workers and a French technician killed in the accident at two local hospitals.

"My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news," Madonna said in a statement last week.

LenkaHappy Summertime, 101D-listers! I know I'm a little late with that greeting, but I was too busy trying to scale the walls of the world finding new music for you to sink your ears into. So yeah, summer is good. Hot weather, cold food, hot people. It's always the summertime that brings the freaks to the streets. When all of that happens, you know that trouble is right around the corner. Speaking of trouble, that brings me to my pick this week. The artist's name is Lenka and she's Australian. You've probably already heard her, as MTV has been abusing a few songs off her self-titled debut album.

Lenka's sound is fitting for any occasion, channeling this Cardigans-esque vibe with a hint of the mid-90s when chick rock was all the rage (It should've never stopped. Shout out to Shirley Manson). Lenka sounds like a musical fairie over guitars and pianos, kind of like Lilith Fair but not as scary. My thumbs up goes to Lenka's track "Trouble Is a Friend" along with "We Will Not Grow Old", which is the song that's currently playing everywhere. Lenka describes her music as "melodramatic pop", which explains why her mu Read More ...

When people hear the phrase singer/songwriter images of a touchy-feely acoustic guitar player who writes about all of his unrequited loves quickly comes to mind.  While that doesn't necessarily describe all of the singer/songwriters out there, one has to admit the image the majority of them portray is that of borderline emos who one could easily imagine crying in the shower.  This is not the case with singer/songwriter Danny Rocco, though, who says "I would like to think my music is a lot more fun than some of those stereotypes!"

Rocco's musical career started at an early age.  Growing up in New York he was the youngest, and smallest, of three brothers.  According to him they had a few tussles in their Long Island home, but those brotherly brawls rarely went well for him.  "I was always kinda tossed around by the older guys who to this day are almost twice my size."  In-between doses of family time with his siblings Rocco was influenced to pick up the violin by his parents.  "I played violin for almost ten years and took it very seriously," he remembers, "when I was in high school I even joined a youth orchestra and toured all of South and Central Read More ...

After his appearance on the David Letterman Show, pop music's most successful musician was escorted to the Savile Roof, where only two other acts have played before. Always the crowd-pleaser, McCartney expanded beyond his two songs in support of the show and treated the crowd to a half hour set, pleading to the nearby police officer, "Can we stay a little longer? Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from Ashley Tisdale to Warped Tour to MTV Hits. All seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

Ashley%20Tisdale* With her latest single, "It's Alright, It's OK," Ashley Tisdale is becoming everything pop radio wanted Kelly Clarkson to be. Thankfully, it's a much more fitting position for Tisdale. This is not a knock on Clarkson. I actually think the former American Idol winner could be making some truly timeless music if given the opportunity (blues or soul anyone?), but pop music just doesn't suit her well, at least not like it suits Tisdale. I also like the way Tisdale is being positioned as the next level up in maturity from Miley Cyrus. Some folks may forget that, despite co-starring in three movies titled High School Musical… you remember, Tisdale was the one who didn't have the nudie pics show up on the web… she's actually 24 years old. Side note - is there any doubt the 2000's will be remembered as the decade Disney just kept crankin out the pop stars?

perezIt doesn't seem to take much effort to land a record deal these days. After terrible actresses like Paris Hilton, Leighton Meester and Linday Lohan have slapped their name on an auto-tuned debut album, it seems only appropriate that Perez Hilton follows the trend.

Perez has claimed that he serves as a marketing A&R genius merely for being a fan of Lady Gaga in her early days, which was about 8 months ago. After his infamous bashing of successful artists like the Black Eyed Peas, what musician will respect his work when they've been badmouthed about their own? Always opinionated, Perez suggested that, "I have an ear, which is really important in the music world - to be able to hear a hit and to be able to know who has a good song or not…".

Now that Perez fills the role of artist rather than critic, who's going to take on the job of abusing his music? I guess the 101d news site will have to suffice. We really have no choice.

newkidsontheblockThis summer has spawned multiple reunion tours among successful acts that thrived in the 80s and 90s. While I am excited to see artists that I was formerly too young to attend their concert, this weekend has made me realize that the reformation of these musicians isn’t a product of newfound creativity, but rather a greed-driven attempt for more cash.

Last night I worked at the New Kids on the Block reunion tour date in Phoenix. I couldn’t help but take notice to not only their still over-inflated egos; but their lack of performance chemistry and overall excitement.

Having been born during the tail end of the 80s, maybe I’m not at liberty to shut these boys down, but hear me out. The New Kids on the Block not only attracted masses of sweating middle-aged women to downtown Phoenix but they made me think about the bigger picture. Of course the die-hard fans of the boys were beyond stoked about the performance, but to a critic like me, it proved obvious that their heart wasn’t in their live show despite the impressive pyrotechnics.

As ‘The Right Stuff’ chorus chanted, I began t Read More ...
hess%20is%20moreGather 'round the campfire, 101D-listers. Mama has a story. So a few years back I wrote for this magazine, right, and one of my duties was reviewing awful CDs. No seriously, I don't think I ever came across a CD that was good. So this one time (at band camp) I had to review an album called Listen Again, a compilation mixed by Rob da Bank and Chris Coco. Who? Exactly. It's a good thing I actually care about my job, because I suffered through this CD sucking on a Ring Pop because I felt like I was in some ecstasy laced hell. Then, I hear this strange computerized yet sultry voiced man go "Hello Sweet Pie..." My ears perked up while he whispered into the track seducing the voice that followed which said, "Yes, Boss. I'm on the mic. I'll try to give you what you like." The song was really just a parade of digital sounds, while this mildly perverse conversation going on seemed to substantiate it. The song was called "Yess Boss" and the group's name was Hess Is More.

Welcome to your weekly dose of pop world musings. Covering all things pop culture, this week Pop Shots is hitting you with thoughts on everything from Jordin Sparks to Attack of the Show to JoJo. All seasoned with a little bit of attitude.

Jordin Sparks* When I first heard my local radio DJ announce they were going to play Jordin Sparks' latest single, "Battlefield," I held my breath praying it wasn't going to be a remake of the Pat Benatar classic "Love is a Battlefield." Thankfully, it wasn't. What Sparks did instead was put together a single that might finally launch her into the second tier of pop stars (which is the tier right under the Lady Gagas and Katy Perrys of the world). Even though American Idol voters are wrong the vast majority of the time (seriously folks, how can you claim to love a singer and then not even buy their album once you've made them the winner), Sparks may have just needed a little time to grow into the pop star role. Heck, if more young artists were given that opportunity to grow who knows what the pop scene would look like right now.

panic%20at%20the%20discoA couple of years ago, Panic! At The Disco certainly set the score for the local scene in my hometown of Las Vegas, Nv. Never having played a local show before they were signed, their success was almost always based on luck. After lead singer Brenden Urie submitted a few tracks to a Pete Wentz blog post, the Fall Out Boy singer offered them a record deal.

Once I began to see them attract fame and MTV almost effortlessly, I also saw their music begin to suffer. Now somewhat disbanded, Panic still has a few committed tour dates they must fill. The band announced this morning that two of the members have parted ways claiming they have different musical goals. Urie and drummer Spencer Smith now remain the only original members.

Panic at the Disco is currently scheduled to open for No Doubt on August 8 in San Diego, and has U.S. dates with Blink-182 planned throughout August. The website claims that these will continue as scheduled and will probably be the last tour dates with the original band.

mccartneyjacksonWith Michael Jackson’s memorial service edging near and his video dedications on VH1 fading away, I am starting to spark curiosity about his assets. Particularity his ownership of John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s song catalogue, Northern Songs, which contains every song written by the pair, leading up to the Beatles legal separation in 1971. For those unfamiliar, Michael Jackson currently owns the rights to most of these songs that have been estimated to value over 600 million.

During the mid-1980s, ATV Music Publishing Company was forced to put itself up for sale and auction off its music, which included Northern Songs. Jackson bid higher than both McCartney and Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono, who had agreed to split the collection price. The two thought that $20 million was too large a sum of money, and let Jackson claim ownership. Spending a total of $47.5 million, the songs then belonged to Jackson. To oversimplify a complicated business, publishing rights are basically the sheet music rights. When Paul McCartney wa Read More ...
Real Deal
Punk rock has always been a musical style that was fueled by high energy and built on a foundation of self-empowerment. While the essence of punk may have become convoluted over the years by way of corporate sponsorships and fashion show images, there are still a few bands that embody the spirit of punk's early days.

Montreal-based The Real Deal channels that classic spirit faster than a Ghost Buster can zap The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Since their formation in 2003, the band has embraced the DIY work ethic that their punk-rock forefathers laid forth and have been touring relentlessly with the likes of Bigwig, Set Your Goals and Ill Scarlet. They even landed dates on the Warped Tour.

After a series of independent releases, the band has hooked up with Stomp Records (owned by Ska giants The Planet Smashers) for their new album Hungover, But Dead Sober. The album takes listeners back to the early '90s era of punk, when bands like Rancid and NOFX were in their prime, and tosses in a healthy dose of Ska that layers everything to create infectious ear candy.

Okay 101D-listers, I'm cheating this week, but bear with me. The band I picked is 75% not from across the pond, but they're Canadian. So maybe not across the pond, but in the great white north, ey? The band's name is Dragonette, and they are quite possibly too rad for words. Dragonette is fronted by Martina Sorbara, who is a new school rock vixen that puts Gwen Stefani and all her little clones to shame. * As everyone knows The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, passed away last week. Pretty much everything that can be said about him has been said already. He was legendary. He was so great that MTV was forced to play his music when the network was refusing to play black artists. When it comes to his passing I think there was something really poetic about the fact that this man who lived almost his entire life engulfed in a sea of camera flashes and probing questions about his personal life was rushed to the hospital and passed away so quickly that the paparazzi don't even have a chance to cover it. There's something really beautiful about the notion that although his life was lived in public, he ended up being allowed to die in private. Rest In Peace to the best that ever did it.

postmarksIndie pop trio The Postmarks are on the verge of releasing their second full-length 'Memoirs At the End.' Like their previous LP, there was a science that went into making this album, as I'm made fully aware of in this darling press release.

"The concept for The Postmarks second record, Memoirs at the End of the World, was born at a dingy bar on Manhattan's Lower East Side. They wanted to go into darker territories that the first album only hinted at. Though pop punk is the latest craze among radio stations and the Warped Tour generation, The Copyrights have taken a slightly different approach to the trendy subgenre. American Diary is on the verge of beginning a new chapter in their illustrious young careers. While the Baltimore based quartet (comprised of vocalist/guitarist Ben DeHan, lead guitarist Mikey Clark, bassist Brandon Ingley and drummer Brandon Reeder) writes compelling pop punk manifestos, their resonance is much richer than that of an average band in the genre, as displayed on their latest offering The Brightest Colors. The BoDeans Rocking Out Live!
The BoDeans could be classified as traditionalists considering the methods they practice when publicizing a record, but the roots-rock collective gets the job done and are probably invading your boombox at this very minute. The Wisconsin-bred quintet has spent the past several weeks traveling to radio stations across the United States to spread the word about their eighth studio album Still, and that's a promotional tactic most artists, and labels, don't seem to utilize nowadays. It's easy to take life for granted, but the Minipop happens to be one of those bands that put everything into perspective. On their captivating debut album A New Hope, the San Francisco-based quartet (comprised of vocalist Tricia Kanne, bassist Nick Forte, guitarist/keyboardist Matthew Swanson and drummer Lauren Grubb) combines majestic pop melodies with tender keyboard-induced harmonies for a tasteful fusion that is pleasant to the ears. Then, Kanne spreads her emotional vocals and her self-reflective lyricism pierces the soul, as portrayed on their single "Like I Do."

Though the innovators of dream pop are finally receiving praise for their unique blend, some of the members were initially achieving a shred of fame as water polo experts. When Swanson graduated college eight years ago, he was coaching high school water polo in the same district where Kanne was competing.
